So a week ago my friend picked up a 5 speed 2.0 non turbo. Car has been running fine until last night. We swapped out the old head into to her new one, and now the car will not go into gear when running. When the car is off it will go into every gear just fine. Is this a wiring issue? I'm new to DSMs so I'm really lost on this one. The clutch feels fine, it's been shifting nice and smooth until this.

There's no way wiring would cause this. It sounds like you need to bleed the clutch. Try that and report back.

The problem is that it shifted perfect before this, and the clutch was very smooth. Although I'm used to my Jetta, so it may be off and just seem right to me. I'll try bleeding it, and check the master cylinder to be sure there is fluid in it. Anything else to check while I'm at it?

That is exactly what I'm saying. Nothing else was changed. And my friend who owns the car talked to another buddy and he said there is a wire running right under the front center console that has to do with shifting. I'm not an idiot about cars and I know how ridiculous it sounds, but that's what happened. I will be bleeding the clutch and checking both slave and master cylinders tonight, but the suddenness of this loss in shifting leads me to believe it could be caused by an electrical issue. There were several wires running around near the shifter that were tugged and moved around quite a bit.

The "wire that has to do with shifting" is your clutch safety switch wire. That would affect your ability to start the car, it has nothing to do with your ability to shift.

Okay, then do these cars have an electronic speed lock out or hydraulic? All I remember seeing was a wire running from up in the guts of the dash back to the base of the shifter. My friend was rather pushy about getting her CD player installed and wanted to do it all her self.

So, basically I'm looking at these possibilities :
Clutch needs to be bled.
Slave / master cylinder bad needs to be replaced.
Throw out bearing is bad, needs to be replaced.
Electronic speed lock out, if they have one, was unplugged.

I am here: Google Maps

The thing is, even if there is some sort of lock out, it's not going to stop you from shifting. The ability to shift a manual transmission is purely mechanical.

Okay. I'll check it all out tomorrow. Tonight was dedicated to finding someone with a flatbed to bring it to my place for cheap.
Question : Is it normal to be able to move the shifter into gear without the clutch when the car is off? My Jetta doesn't let me do it but my brother said that was normal in his Probe. I've never owned or worked on a Mitsu so I'm totally in the dark on this one. And also, are there dealer service manuals for these cars? I'd really like to pick one up.

If the car goes into gear when the car is off, but not when running, its the Master Cyl.
If the clutch sticks to the floor, its the slave cyl.
If the radio honestly caused your master cyl to go, then this car is magical...

I was only thinking along the lines of an electrical issue. I've heard of some crazy things happening before, nothing like this though. I'll make sure to ask her how it was shifting before we parked it to do the radio.
Would a master cylinder from Advance Auto or O'Reillys suffice or should I order one online?

this has happened to me numerous times...take the stereo out and you will see a bunch of the factory loomed wires that you probally had to move to wire up the HU in the way..just tuck them to the side and get some zip ties tied up there and your good to go

MAAAJIIIICAAALLL. I dont think its your stereo. Deffinitly sounds like it Has to do with the hydraulic clutch system. Try bleeding it.

Did you run any wire through your pedal assembly? If so perhaps they may be blocking the clutch from fully being depressed.
