Hi guys, I am looking into replacing a clutch in my 1990 Talon AWD. I am not looking to spend a fortune, and for atleast the next year the car is going to stay stock. I found this clutch/ PP combo and wanted to see if anyone has had any experience with it. I know of and heard of Exedy but have never personally ran any of their products. If anyone has any insight on this, let me know!

Should be a very good clutch kit, probably too good. What I mean is, if you're not planning to stay at the stock level why not just resurface what you have and get just a good clutch disk unless what you have is beyond resurfacing, in which case, go for it. That flywheel should be good with any PP and clutch you throw at it in the future.
 
I just don't have an reputable machine shop around me, plus I would feel more comfortable with all new parts down there. I know I need to get the OEM TOB, and I am going to have to get a new clutch fork/pivot ball but I just seen this clutch kit and thought it looked like a good deal so I thought I would ask for other opinions. Thanks for the feedback man and I'll go ahead and order it up!
 
You can get that OEM clutch for about $120 on Amazon directly ("Exedy 05048" are your key words) -- this is cheaper than I can get it as a distributor! As for the flywheel, I would strongly recommend the Competition Clutch street flywheel over the Fidanza; it is a 1-piece design and is balanced from the manufacturer and doesn't have the dumb replacement friction surface that typically warps with Fidanza products. You can get it also for about $200 through Amazon ("2-735-1ST flywheel competition clutch" are your key words).

You are spending $320 on Amazon with free shipping, and don't have to deal with Ebay.
 
Thanks @twicks69. Save me a few more dollars, and I have read some yes and some no's on the Fidanza flywheel. Do you recommend using the OE TOB, and tossing the one in the kit?

If you can swing the cost for the OEM TOB, I would highly suggest it. I went through two aftermarket units years ago before I wised up to using the OEM unit. These were also on more aggressive clutch setups though. The aftermarket one would make a great spare in an emergency, or a great paper weight.

I also would recommend against the multi-piece flywheel.

Alright. Thanks for all the information guys! I ordered the Competition Clutch flywheel and the Exedy OEM replacement clutch kit both from Amazon just a few minutes ago! I will wait until Friday and the order the OEM TOB, some new OEM flywheel bolts, and a rear main seal from STM since I have to order a couple other things from them anyway :D

I appreciate all the help!

Are the Southbend TOB's better than OEM? My OEM ones always rattle and make noise after some time. Usually when I pull the trans, it's in pieces.
 
The OEM is better; if you are shattering them, you have other issues going on, like a damaged pressure plate, or an over-adjusted clutch, or loose/missing bellhousing bolts, or missing alignment dowels, or a damaged crank / mis-aligned flywheel that is not sitting flush.

Well, it's been a while since I have pulled the trans but the TOB is making noise so I'm sure it's on its way out however it still shifts very well. Thanks for the info.
 
As well, do not ever clean a TOB with brake cleaner or other solvent; it degrades the grease on the bearing internally and will cause issues. Just wipe clean with a clean towel, or replace if worn/noisy. Also inspect the TOB sleeve on the bell housing. On the 2G AWD transmissions, there is a press-fit steel guide sleeve that takes all the wear and should have a thin coat of synthetic grease on it (and the bore of the TOB) when the TOB is installed. With 1G AWD/FWD and 2G FWD bell housings, there is no metal sleeve so you only have the cast aluminum sleeve which can get worn or have grooving which will hang up the TOB and cause damage.
