I had it happen on a Firebird. I was driving down the highway and the car gradually lost power. Eventually I couldn't even hold speed, and could only idle down the road. Your exhaust manifold gets VERY hot, and you just have no power whatsoever even though the car seems to idle fine. If you have an automatic transmission, it can also manifest as a shifting problem...i.e. the car never seems to want to shift up. I got my Firebird to the shop by taking a hacksaw and cutting a slot in the entrance to the Cat...that was enough to get me going again.

if it doesnt rev past a certain amount, It will also be clogged.

We had a yard truck that wouldnt rev past 3000, and clogged cat was the problem

I thought that all DSM owners gutted their cats except maybe if you live in a smog state.

A bad cat usually is accompanied by a woshing air sound during driving.Sometimes is followed by a louder than usual intake sound.Sometimes poping in the intake.Kinda like a old Ford with a crushed exhaust pipe.

People will flag you down that your car is "on fire". It happened to me and I had flames coming out the muffler and cat was glowing red. After that grass catches on fire because you pulled over on a grassy shoulder. Fun, I tell you.

I had it happen on my jeep. It got so much back pressure that it eventually wouldn't start. I had to run an open header just to get it to the shop. The few times I did get it started with the clogged cat I could barely feel any exhaust coming out the back.

the cat went bad on my 88' camry
the car just slowly lost power over a long period of time, i couldnt figure out what was wrong with it, the car would bog down every time i opened the throtle more than about a third of the way, and after about 3200rpms the needle would just creep very slowly.
i wanted to check the cat by taking it to school and using the thermal scaner (the gun shaped thing that you point at stuff and it tells you how hot it is) to check the temp befor and after the cat. unfortunatly somebody stole it so i couldnt do it that way so i just hollowed it out on a hunch. ya the cat was melted into one big blob

that car never ran better.

I think you can tell by reading your vac on the boost gauge. I think if it reads low the cat could be clogged. Normally you should see around 18-19 when the car is hot at idel....

Well, my car idles like bs and is missing really bad. The intake is very loud and makes a turbo like sound when I try to excellerate. Also when the maf is unplugged, the car idles fine. DO any of you think its my CAT?

sounds like you have a vaccum leak, check to make sure you biss screw is still in, thos tend to suck a lot of air in when they are gone

From what I've read on the rx7club, one of the first signs of a clogged cat for a turbocharged car is a gradual loss of boost. So if you are suddenly having low boost or boosting issues, that might be a good indicator.

Hope this helps! :thumb:

That's what the post-cat 02 sensor is for. The ECU monitors this sensor ONLY to compare its values to the first 02 sensor and determine the efficientcy of your cat. If it is significantly reduced, it'll throw a CEL at you. It's code 72 if you're checking codes through the CEL, or P0420 is you're cool and have a logger.

my buddies 93 rx7 twin turbo we put on twin manual boost controllers and wondered y the boost would not move up from 5 psi.... We had the boost controllers twisted all the way in prolly good for 35 psi LOL but we still only got 5 psi... so we took off his exhaust and looked into his cat and it looked like all the honeycombs FUSED together to make one huge molten ball of metal that cooled and blocked the flow of exhaust...... we make a test pipe and we took of the manual boost controllers and easily got 10-11 psi without any boost controll. hehe :p

Just build yourself a $20 test pipe, bolt it in, and be done with it. :thumb:
