** Edit ** Fixed, see last post.

My car is making a clicking noise when accelerating. It only does it when it's in gear, and appears to be happening during boost. It started after I got my exhaust changed. It doesn't happen when cruising, only accelerating. And it doesn't happen if I accelerate very slowly.

Any ideas what it could be? It seems to be coming from the front of the car.

And here's a video of normal driving - No noise. It only happens when accelerating.

Downshift - No noise (there is paper blowing around in this video and my blinker is on (not the problem noise)

EDIT

Pics the exhaust shop sent me when the car was done.

Well, saying that you got your exhaust changed. Makes me think that you have exhaust rattle. I have herd some crazy noises coming from rattling exhausts. I'm not sure if you have confirmed if it's not but I would start there. Also, would see if your drive shaft isn't spinning/hitting on your exhaust.

I thought it would be the drive shaft too, but I took it back to the exhaust shop and they assured me it wasn't anywhere near the drive shaft. They sent some pics over to me as well, and it's definitely not touching. Plus it doesn't do it when cruising, so I doubt it's the drive shaft.

I'm not even sure if it's related to the exhaust being switched, it could be a coincidence, but it did start right after that.

Man, that sounds crazier and crazier every time I listen to it. Because it goes away after you push the clutch in, so that to me takes away any transmission issues. Then you accelerate again, the load on your car makes that sound again... Not sure if it could be a blown CV drive axle, just throwing that out there?

It sounds like the exhaust hitting the drive shaft to me as well. When you accelerate, the motor and tranny moves around a good bit unless you have solid motor mounts. It could be when you gas it, the motor twists and brings the drive shaft close enough to hit the exhaust.

Just my thoughts.

yeah, that was what I was set on to, but he's saying the exhaust place said it wasn't close to the drive shaft.

Yeah, only makes sense LOL. has to be exhaust hitting. Any noise when you down shift?

No, no noise when downshifting. I took a video of that too, I added it to the original post.

I would have to think it was the exhaust too, What about the bracket that bolts the halfshaft to the back of the motor (Bolts can break or back out) It will swing there, I had a clicking sound on accel and It was this on my car.

Don't trust what they say jack it up and take a look your self, it does look pretty close in a couple spots but its hard to see, the engine will move causing the drive line to move also as stated above, and it also doesn't help that u have old ruber that holds the drive shaft in place. If its really close to the drive line like a inch or closer have them redo it.

you can also put the car on jackstands, put it in gear, and look under it
thinc it will reveal if driveshaft rubs exhaust

Yah check for any fresh metal spots. It looks super close to where your drive line goes into the rear diff, like its rubbing on the magnaflow resonator but hard to see cause it so dark. The first pic where the flang is looks close and the third pick where the resonator is.

Sounds almost like the rear carrier bearing in the driveshaft does when I launch. Get underneath the car and pull on the driveshaft at the rear bearing and see how worn out the insulation in the bearing is. You can remedy this by filling it with waterproof silicone if it's worn out. In order for the driveshaft to be hitting the exhaust and making this noise it would almost have to be hitting a counder balance or a yoke, since the rest of the driveshaft is smooth and would not make the same noise.

How about the two missing bolts in the top of your rear diff mounting area?

I have missing bolts? Can you circle them on the pic?

The noise is definitely coming from the front of the car though, so I don't think it's anything in the rear.

There should be two bolts here. I believe they may be there since last I remember they were inset in the two holes.

Well shit, good catch, thanks! I'll jack up the rear today after work and get some better pictures. If they're missing, where can I get replacements?

**EDIT**

Here's the high rez, it kinds looks like they are there... I'm not sure what they're supposed to look like though.

They are there. The bolts are recessed in the mustache bar.

Yea my EVO made a sound like that and it was the driveshaft rubbing the exhaust. I would also check the timing belt covers.

My money's on that magniflow resonator, looks to have a few places were it could make contact with either the drive shaft or the diff. And nosies thru the driveline can travel and seem like they are in front.
