Hey guys,

I'm about to start putting back my engine togeter after the balance shaft elimination so the oil pan is off ... I wanted to clean the coolant passages inside my engine before putting back the water pump. Would it be a good idea to lean my engine on the side (presently on stand) cap the hole where the thermostat housing is and fill it up with a bottle of CLR, top it with water than let it soak for 1 or 2 days ?

I'm asking because that how I cleaned my thermostat housing and it now looks like new. My coolant has been infected since the day I bought this JDM car. Last winter I deleted the heater core, fiav, change the radiator, change every coolant hoses and cleaned evertything I could. The only thing missing is the inside of the block and I can see crap and kind of build up when looking with a flash light inside the hole where the water pump sit.

Thanks

Here the reply I had from Bogus

I have not cleaned a block with that method before. I knock out the freeze plugs and stick a pressure washer nozzel in there and blow it all out.

Bogus does not give bad advice, I'd listen to him.

Also please post as many pictures of that GSR-4 as possible, they are so hard to find pictures of!

yeah bogus is very helpfull so i would really listen to him he has helped me a few times before and he has pulled through everytime

Most of the crud is build up from using tap water, the heavy sediments from tap water settled to the bottom of the water jacket, then add rust scale from the iron block, oxidization from the alum head and radiator. Maybe add in some stop leak goop.

When filling your cooling system you should use purified water and antifreeze of your choice, anti-freeze contains rust inhibitors.

I did a water pump in a car that was sitting for a year the other day. It was full of gunk. I just caped the water pump outlet tube and stuck a hose in the coolant fill spot. I flushed it all out the water pump hole on the block. After it started, I ran it for a bit with water and drained it. Filled it up with 50/50 and it was good to go.
