hi all,
Just got a new 14b couldnt be happier perfection for 125$!

it has some surface rust in the coolant vanes from sitting around, im guessing. also it has weird packaging material dust ,just about everywhere.

can i just spray something like wd40 in it to clean it out?

been looking for a while and people are saying brake cleaner, but i mean come on that stuff will take you skin off!

any input would be great.

You will be ok using brake cleaner. I use it all the time at work to clean parts. You dont want to get too crazy with it when your cleaning the oil passages. You will want to prime it with oil before you install it. You might want to use compressed air to remove any dirt/dust from the turbo also.

IF you wanna get crazy you can use Purple Power and a wire brush. Or just take apart the whole turbo and have it bead blasted so its like new? I like doing that. Seeing the transformation from old to new.:hellyeah:

its off an old volvo its years range from 84 to 92 i believe (just worried about the seals) , ill use the brake cleaner. sidenote iv never liked using any kind of chemicals and i freak out when i sand things, in terms of safety equipment LOL.

any brake cleaner recommendations? different brands do different things? and would carb cleaner work? id imagine it has same properties with a better chance of not ruining any seals?

Brake clean is perfect for this job.
Spray all over and wheels inside and out.
Also disconnect all lines and flush with brake clean with the straw.
If you would like you can take the compressor cover off for a better job.

When they say sand blast or bead blast, they don't mean physically sanding the chra, typically its professionally done and it takes off the mere surface of rust and anything other than metal. It removes everything but metal. For a piece as small as a chra to get media blasted would probably cost you $30 and take a half hour of your time if a shop just took it to the back and did it while you wait.
