not sure if 96 is obd2, it may only be 97+ thats obd2 however you get a pocket scanner, plug it into your car and have it read the code. after you fix it, reset the code.

all 2g dsm are obd2 since the change started 94 and these cars where build half way.

just go get any digital scanner for obd2 so it tells you what is wrong.

fyi dsm link comes with built in scanner just another reason why to get it LOL

Just get one of the Actron's they use at AutoZone...I highly doubt you can afford the 2500.00 to 5000.00 it will cost to get something like a Solus.

your local autozone does it for free

Buy this and it will save you so much time money and hassle. Autozone is for the mechincally DECLINED
Amazon.com: Equus 3100 Innova CanOBD2 Diagnostic Tool: Automotive

Or this more expensive one
Amazon.com: Equus 3130 Innova Diagnostic Code Scanner with Live, Record and Playback Data Capability for OBDII Vehicles: Automotive

I have one they are easy to use, and along sie google and code reader websites, you cannot go wrong.

I've easily saved myself over 1000$ this year on not getting diags from dealerships or going off the shit advice of places like Autozone or Orielys.
