so i definatly have a BIG leak coming from my intake manifold gasket so i just ordered one.... im guessing ill have to take the fuel rail and injectors, and throttle cables out... are there any other gaskets like O ring gaskets for injectors or anything i will need to do this job properly? can some people just let me know everything i need to do the job so i can buy the stuff?...

ive searched and theres one thread where the guy is asking the same exact thing i am but he has no replies so......

lets get some replies!..... thanks

oh and also my power steering just went out! but my bet is still on there looking good and turning..... does that just mean its my pump?

Do you have power steering fluid?

And as far as i know you just have to take off the intake manifold, take off the gasket, put new one on, then put back on intake manifold and anything else you had to take off.

it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the injector seals, they are only a few bucks. Also not a bad I idea to replace the throttle body gaskets, this is not necessary though. It's pretty straight forward. Look forward to getting your knuckles cut up, it gets tight around there.

Make sure the hoses are still connected everywhere in your ps system. If not I would try a different pump.

On my 2g I had to take the throttle body off to get the manifold off because of my cruise control, that meant new throttle body gaskets. I didn't have a problem with my injector seals but they were already pretty new so some new ones would be a good idea. FWIW I would suggest a phenolic gasket such as the ones that Magnus or Hondata sell. These are thick plasticy gaskets that actually crush the shape of the manifold and head into their material and also act as a heat barrier. They are more expensive ($30) but are nearly infinitely re-usable. I would also suggest borrowing or buying some ratcheting wrenches. You'll curse and possibly cry if you don't have them.

Ive been hearing baad reviews on those heat barrier gaskets. I had one on my 2G, nothing special really. I had to open up the stud holes on the gasket, I figured it should've been a straight drop in but no. I had the Team XXX one. But Ive been hearing they leak. Idk.

Just installed a magnus gasket on my car, fit fine but I haven't fired it up yet.As for getting the intake manifold off...

Remove upper IC piping.

Remove the battery and tray.

Remove the coolant lines running from the thermostat housing to the throttle body.

Remove the throttle body.

Remove the starter, one bolt on each side of it. (Makes it 100x easier to get your hand in there)

Of course remove the spark plug wires and fuel rail and injectors.

Now like stated above GET A 12MM RATCHET WRENCH! The smaller the better, it will make the job much easier and faster.

There are a total of 9 12mm nuts and 3 14mm nuts, the 14s and 4 of the 12s you can get at with a socket, but the 5 12s under the intake manifold must be reached with a box wrench. Break it loose with a regular wrench then use the ratchet wrench to turn them off.

If you don't mind driving without PS it makes it much easier to reinstall the intake manifold with the PS lines removed, your call.

If you have any questions or get stuck be sure to post back in this thread to help future members, because I couldn't find any info on this before I did it either.

I've also heard this.

I know that 99gstRacer had a problem with his, but he had put it on and off many times first. And boosted240 somethin or the other posted up a pic of one they kept going through on their track car or something. It kept burning through where the egr valve recirculates, I'm betting the reason for that is they were probably still using the egr valve, allowing the exhaust to back-travel into the intake manifold and burning up the gasket. Either that or too much exhaust restriction and hot gasses staying in the head.

Either way though many people have been using them for many years and these are the only two instances that I have heard about where people had problems.

i dont mind driving without PS but should i take out the pump and reseviore to drop wieght?. does the PS belt run over anything else besides the PS? like can i remove all that?..

and what kind of injector seals should i get?.... idk what they look like or anything or what there called so its hard for me to know if im getting the right part.

thanks for the help too

yeah i already oredered the gasket and im pretty sure its the one you guys are talking about

You want the lower seals, uppers should be fine as they don't wear out very often, lowers last a long time as well actually.

As for the PS, I removed mine to clean up the engine bay so I pulled the pump and bracket and cut the lines down under the intake manifold, but now that I don't have PS I don't ever want to go back to it. I love not having, the car feels much more raw now.

Also if you're going to be getting prothane motor mounts or doing the window weld mod (I did works great and it's cheap) a good time to do that would be when the intake manifold is out, otherwise it's downright horrible even with a lift. (trust me I know)

Would it be recommended to use any kind of sealant on the intake or just slap it on? Its my first tine swapping one out.

I would also replace the coolant hoses from the throttle body, I change my im basket over the weekend and the hoses were really hard and pretty brittle, since I didn't have any I used the same ones, and what do you know, two minutes after I start the car to warm it up, the hose ruptured and there's coolant all over the place

Hey how is that gasket holding up? I just got mine in today and need to pull my intake manifold. Did you install it with any other sealant or anything? Any boost leaks with it? Thanks!

+1 I have the same question.

+1 Nice down and dirty write-up!

I have been running a magnus heat barrier gasket for a little over a year and I boost leak test my car about once a month, and it's holding up great!

Did you use any sealant like copper spray or did you install it dry?

The OEM manifold gasket is MD188995..Its metal and made to crush and seal...

I was talking about the Magnus heat barrier intake manifold gasket and if I should spray it with something like copper spray before I install it

I didn't spray mine and it's sealing up just fine. The only issue I ever encountered was the gasket melting around the EGR hole in the head. I sealed up the EGR port and haven't had an issue since.

I sadwiched my heat barrier gasket between 2 felpro fiber gaskets. Been working great since.

Greg
