My master cylinder went out, I replaced it and gravity bled the system last night. Went to drive it and 1st and 2nd would not go into gear... 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse worked just fine. What did I do wrong here?

Check out YouTube. Jacks transmission has a great video on the correct adjustment.

Gravity-bleeding only works if your clutch is adjusted properly. You likely still have air trapped in the system or the clutch is not adjusted enough to fully engage the clutch. If you keep driving the car with a poorly-adjusted clutch, you'll wipe out the synchros in your trans in no time.

I only drove it around the block then parked it. So adjust the clutch then bleed again?

You can also try reverse bleeding. It's a lot better because its impossible for air to get trapped in the line. It can also pressurize the line which makes it feel amazing.

So take the cap off of the reservoir and pump the slave by hand?

You'd take a pump with a clear hose to make sure you are not pumping air into the slave. You attache the hose to the bleeder and both open and close it with the hose on the bleeder.

If you can find one a old style oil can with the gun style hand pump works freaking amazing. If notyou can check out what else they carry. The oil can is just much eaiser.

Is there a write up anywhere on how to do this?

keep bleeding the lines manually and you will get good results. and maybe you got a bad slave cylinder. keep bleeding the line see what happends.

But bleeding the line isn't going to do me any good if the clutch isn't adjusted properly, correct?

The clutch pedal should never stick down by itself. You have alot of rod threaded through that clevis pin. I'd start with at least backing it down some. I don't think you're pushing the master down far enough with that much adjustment left on the table. Adjust then bleed again.

A much simpler way of bleeding it, is just like you would do brakes. Have a helper pump the pedal a few times, hold it, open the bleeder on the slave, close it, release pedal. Repeat until new clean fluid comes out of the bleeder. Also it wouldn't hurt to start with the adjustment out more. I'd get the end of the rod close to flush with the clutch lever, fully bleed the system and go from there.

Alright, I'll give that a shot. Looks like the girlfriend is going to help whether she likes it or not! LOL Again, thanks for all of your help guys. I really do appreciate it! :thumb:

Spoolin92gsx did what I did and it works and I think is one of the simpler ways. Its easy to chase your tail with clutch adjustments. So having a system in plans helps.
