i was thinking of putting a catback on my car...... but i already have the catiylitic converter off and a test pipe on wondering if i should spend the money on a catback....is it going to give me more HP!!....... or just sound good

yeah a catback might give you a couple ponies theres like 1 million threads on this forum about that you should just check those out for more info and plus a catback will give a you a good sound depending on the size and brand good luck:thumb:

The other part you wanted to know about was sound. Well depending on the resonator used by that specific brand you purchase, you could get a great sound or something a little lackluster.

Greddy makes great quiet exhaust if you want the power and lower volume, on the other end of the spectrum is OBX, if you're on a budget get that. Sounds like running a straight pipe on my old car, LOL.

I did ad a 22 inch resonator to one of my projects that had OBX and it now has a great deep sound without all the crackle.

hope that helps

I just installed a full catback system! Megan Headers+Test Pipe+Exhaust and I love it! Sounds deep, increases horsepower! Haven't gotten it dyno-ed, but you can feel it. Probably 5-10 HP Gain...

Sorry to burst people's bubbles about 10-15 gains through exhausts beeing done but 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS - Power Pages - Import Tuner magazine

there are some more realistic numbers. A thing to keep in mind though, is that the more air you put into the engine, the more important your exhaust becomes. While there set up they only gained about 2-4hp with a doen exhaust, if you through in bigger TB/IM cams then your exhaust will give you more hp. Or if you turbo your exhaust could give you closer to 10-15 hp. Its all about getting air out as fast as possible, if you arent sucking much in, no real need for bigger exhaust.

If you plan on turboing I would get a 3-3 1/2inch. If you stay all motor i beleive that 2 1/2inch is the best set-up.

For sound, i reccomend going to youtube and searching eclipses and there exhaust and choose from there what you like best. Also, your intake will change the cound aswell as your catback.

what kind of catback did you go with?

After i installed my header/downpipe and took of my catylitic converter
and my ram air i gained about 20hp and much better throttle response
it is a amazing diference

When I did my turbo install I gained just about 1697.13 hp whoa

but of course this is just an estimate

Sorry I can't help myself.. but seriously, there are gains to be had with aftermarket exhausts and you should definitely consider it. Keep in mind anything for a GST (NOT GSX) will fit as they're the same post-cat between the NT and Turbo models. Personally I went with a 3" GST system from Ebay (SRS brand) and it's awesome. I lost low end power but gained a bit up top, and when I went turbo it was perfect. If I planned to stay NA I'd go 2.5" max. Look at the ebay exhausts, they're like $200-300 shipped and the quality is great. I've gone to two different exhaust shops to get work done to my downpipe and the techs at both places were impressed with the quality.

umm... i doubt it. sorry to rain on your parade man. heres the truth.

Wow, blast from the past haha. Anyways I skimmed the article and it doesn't specify (from what I can tell) if they removed the stock cat. Removing the stock cat & catback for a test pipe and 3" catback actually provided noticeable gains on my car (although it was boosted prior to the install of those parts). That cat is quite restrictive, but I highly doubt 20hp out of a test pipe on a n/t.

Sorry Should Have Been More Specific With Everthing On Ther Just Running Its About 10-14hp But With The Ram Air And Going 60mph It's About 16-20hp Gain/ WITH K&N FILTER BUT PROBABLY AROUND 15HP TOTAL PLANNING ON A DYNO SESSION SOON WILL POST IT WHEN I DO IT

ANOTHER THING I NOTICED WAS WITH A N/T AND THE CATILIYTIC CONVERTER OFF IT SOUND GOOD WHEN YOU FLOOR IT BUT AT A IDLE IT SOUNDS LIKE A POS HONDA

BY THE WAY THE SRS CATBACK DO YOU HAVE ANY VIDEOS OF WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE LOOKED ON YOUTUBE AND ALL I GOT WAS A BUNCH OF GARBAGE

can I just ask where you're pulling your numbers from? Because I'm pretty sure it's your ass ROFL. Just as an FYI, without evidence, you just look like a tard saying you picked up x amount of horsepower from a mod. ;)

First Of All I Was Guesing And Second Of All After I Get My Head Out Of My A**/ I Said I Was Planning On A Dyno Session To See How Much It Actually Is It Is (guessing) Around 10-15hp Not 20hp(mymistake) So U Just Calm Down It's Okay

AND BUY MY VIRTUAL ENGINE CALCULATOR IT SAYS IT PUTTING OUT 154 FLYWHEELHP SO ONLY 14HP

sounds like you didnt look at the import tuner magazine. To sum it up they took a stock 420a eclipse, added a AEM CAI, headers and exhaust and gained a grand totla off.... 4.2hp and 8.7 TQ... So while i dont know your ram air set-up i highly doubt that its netting you 12hp over the AEM, especially sense their filters are just as good if not better than K&N... maybe 12hp at the crank, but we all know WHP is all that matters.

Yeah That Sounds About Right Maybe Twelve Maybe Its The Torque I Feeling Idk But I Think Im Goin To Run It At The Track Pretty Soon So I Will Post The Time Slip.... We Took A Stopwatch And Ran It Between A Mile Markers (1/8)mile And It Was 10.34 Sec Witch Calculates Out To 16.13 In A (1/4) But Give Or Take A Few It Was A Rough Estimate So I Could See Only Gaining 10hp?

MY RAM AIR IS SOLID THOUGH I CUT THAT STOCK AIR THING OFF AND TOOK WASHING MACHICE HOSE AND RIVITED ON THERE AND RAN IT OUT THE RIGHT FRONT OPENING ON THE BUMPER SO ITS GETTING ALOT OF AIR YOU CAN HERE IT WHEN YOUR GOING DOWN THE ROAD IT KINDA SOUNDS LIKE A SUPERCHARGER

I'd say a Hundred dollars wasted on a dyno session just to find out the REAL horsepower gain from adding even a full exhaust, would be better spent at a strip club. These guys speak the truth. With CAI, MSD, Headers-back, you'll MAYBE get 14HP at like 5800rpm Add a bigger bore TB and you might get one or two more ponies.

TO THE OP: Get a cat-back. If you were to add a cat-back instead of stock, you'll see MAYBE 3 HP gain. And depending on how deep your pocket is, is how nice it will sound, depending on your opinion of what sounds nice.

Would love to see a picture, but if it is how i am interpritting it, i would through some type of filtering mechanism on there.

looks good, but would i be correct in assuming that that hose leads back to your filter? running without a filter is a horrible idea, not to mention take much caution in the rain/snow

LOL

That looks like something i did a long time ago! :thumb:

Im Running a short ram, test and moded GST Back. Sounds really good! but i lost a bit in the lower end:( but over 3700rpm It starts too pull and i got this nice little spooling sound:D man its taking me too long building my turbo kit!!! need money :banghead:

Enough with the, "I think I gained this much hp". It'll always feel like you gained horsepower, it's a mental thing. If you really want to determine, go to the dyno, disappoint yourself and realize you only gained about a third of what you thought you did.

It's all about maintaing as little backpressure as possible while keeping a good scavenging effect.
I would say your 2.5" statement for N/A is correct, but I wouldn't see much of a need to go over 3".

OP, As Delta said, just get a catback.
