He might be planning on going turbo?

Catco makes the the best functional cat convertors.

If you have to pass emission I suggest them.

If not, get the cheapest 3" cat you can and punch it out.

I bought a new catalytic converter for my 2G 1996 420a off of ebay. Once I received it I had to cut the flanges off of it due to not fitting properly on the flange to the downpipe and cat-back system. Had the guy at the muffler shop fix it for me at a good deal.

I've been trying to stay away from Ebay parts. I've had problems with them in the past and I know a few people who also have had problems with parts from ebay.

Does the area in PA where you are have anything more then visual inspection? The part of the state where my car is registered only requires visual inspection so I have a 3" test pipe with the shell of a cat welded on top of it.
