Just picked up this 93 gs as a daily driver with 200k on the engine for 400$,it's super clean and decided togive it a tune up since it was running rich and had bad belts... well i heard this wierd noise like a jacked up bearing or something near the water pump,it's not crankwalk or a spun bearing. just sounds like a pulley is out of whack,so i replaced the power steering belt, flushed the radiator, replaced alternator/water pump belt, replaced motor mounts and flushed the engine replaced the filter/oil. and so on...IT GETS 6 MPG ,the timing belt is old and off a tooth. would this cause mileage loss? i've heard it from 7 different people. i know these cars run rich but seriously 6mpg? what can it be? everything tests out good. would it be a dirty fuel filter?bad fuel pump?injectors dirty? I bought it 100% stock and also i hear the injectors make a" ttt t t tick bzzzzzz" noise when the car starts and runs like that for a bit then stops, they all spray fine but dump too much...whats wrong here? heres a video of my car, dunno if it will do justice but you be the judge.:dsm:

Front o2 sensor would be my best bet, and of course that timing belt being off is just bad business whether your getting 36 or 6mpg.

:dsm:

all i need is a tensioner and the belt or what? okay but the 02 sensor looks so perfect.

Fix the timing, change the o2 sensor, check that the Mass Airflow Sensor is working properly, and check the fuel pressure regulator. If the diaphragm gets a hole in it, the vacuum line will be blasting 40psi of fuel directly into the intake manifold.

When you get it figured out, CHANGE YOUR OIL. There is so much fuel in your oil that your engine will fail in 500 miles or less.

Where would the FPR be located and what exactly should i be looking for?how would i go about testing the MAS?

And yeah definitely... the oil is BLACK...smells like gas.

I heard the charcoal canister/evap could have part in it..
PLUS I also heard the fuel pump and/or the fuel injectors could be bored out from all the 212,xxx miles they've been through causing more fuel to dump from having a wider spray ..so tonight i'm gonna check these problems !

I do appreciate the time you guys are spending on helpin' me with this little problem.

i love these cars !

On the driver's side of the fuel rail.

Not to the tune of 6mpg. Guys eliminate their emissions crap all the time and their cars get the same mileage...sometimes better.

Not likely. Even installing 650cc injectors would result in a 30% drop in fuel economy- yours is more like a 200% drop.

Okay so far the spark cables were cross firing so we installed some new ones and thats off the check list, plugs are good too,its firing correctly our next guess is to check the knock sensor how would we do that? checking the FPR how do we check it? then well move on to the fuel filter and then the fuel pump then the injectors..how would we check all of this? :p please help meh out! were in the garage and the buds went to buy a 20 pack. while i check in with u guys, please reply! thanks guys.OH AND MIND YOU ITS A 1G

YOU HELP ME WITHOUT TYPING ANYTHING NEW i belive i found out why it runs rich remember this block of text??

" The best quick-test for any fuel pressure regulator is to pull the vacuum line and see if fuel squirts out while the engine is running. This would show that the diaphragm inside has a hole in it. If there is no fuel at the vacuum line, listen closely for a change in the engine's idling characteristic. If the engine's idle does not seem to change when the vacuum is taken away, the regulator may be defective.

Normally a faulty fuel pressure regulator will result in a higher-than-normal fuel pressure....especially at idle when the engine's vacuum system would normally draw the regulator open, allowing less pressure at the rail so the engine does not flood itself out while idling.

Our OEM regulators are fairly simple, although they can wear out over years of use. Think of a fuel pressure regulator as a blow off valve for your fuel system....it opens at idle and on vac, closes under normal driving and light boost, and more force is applied to it as the boost level increases.
"
i did the test and the idle WAS EXACTLY THE SAME WITH NO DIFFERENCE,i heard the air sucking in the vaccum pretty loudly too...is this RESOLVED??? what do you think?? BAD FPR??REMEMBER...IT IS A 93 with 212K miles! LET ME KNOW! ;)gonna have a beer.

Personally, I say no your problem hasn't been resolved... The fpr being bad would be convenient for you but you won't know for sure until you replace it with a known good one. The front o2 sensor could have gone bad and be sending the ECU a reading that makes it want to run rich, however replacing it would take a little time and a new one would be about $75 give or take. If neither of these two things fix your problem I'd say pull the ECU and give it a good visual/sniff check. Sometimes the capacitors will burn up and will keep the injectors OPEN 100% of the time in some cases, I've heard of horror stories that fuel was coming out of the exhaust manifold because of it. You could possibly be seeing milder case of this, you just won't know for certain though until you replace those few things.

I can tell you your just wasting your time checking your fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel injectors because if any of these things needed replaced you wouldn't be having these symptoms.
