OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

I'm not sure how you ran your car with no fans, but try and burp your cooling system take the radiator cap and thermostat out and turn on the car and let it sit and get all the air out, if that doesn't work then you might want to flush your cooling system, something might be blocking it thats why your hoses swell, also check your oil and see if it looks like choclate milk which is a sign of blown headgasket, doesn't work all the time if all that doesn't work then your looking at pulling the head and check your headgasket and you might as well do a water pump head gasket and timing belt. if you run your car hard does water boil threw the return tank thingy if so my moneys on headgasket.

Your cooling fan should turn on when your car reaches normal temperature in order to maintain normal operating temperatures through out the engine if you arent running your car with the cooling fan installed that is just asking for something to go wrong. Put your stock cooling fan in...check the fuses for it and the relays. Let your car idle until it hits normal temp. to see if the fan turns itself on. If it doesnt and your fuses and relays are all good you may want to change the temperature sensor switch at the bottom of your radiator. None of these parts are expensice unless you get into replacing your water pump.
Always do things in order the first time instead of just trying the easy route the first time and you will save your self lots of money and trouble

Sorry for the long post

if you let it idle does it overheat, or only when driving, drive it around and see if you stay out of boost if it'll over heat and then see if it overheats when boosting

if it only overheats while boosting i bet money on head gasket, if it does it while idleing with the hood open then something such as flushing radiator cap thermostat and hoses I'd say change first. then waterpump, also check and see if your radiator cap is good boil some water stick that sucker in and see if it opens.

Alright Another day another problem. I found my car overheating so i checked and the fan was broken and the motor was still trying to turn the fan so the fan motor was extremely hot or so my hand told me. I put a new fan in its bigger than the stock one. Fill the fluids up and didn't get hott on the way to school or at lunch but on the way home it does the same shit. I can't find any leaks and i don't know why its doing it. Maybe from me getting on it I don't know. Help me out

When you say it does the same stuff, does that mean the fan motor is hot or that its just overheating still? Is the fan turning at all? Is the new fan installed the right way - is it pulling air or pushing air?

I'm not as sure with a 1g, but on a 2g, the fan turns on when the coolant temperature hits about 200*F.

Have you checked your thermostat? Could be that it coincidentally failed after the fan, and it's not the fan at all.

If you have a logger, you can monitor coolant temp. If you start the car cold, the radiator hose should be cool until the coolant temp gets to around 180* depending on the particular thermostat you have (some open at 180, some at 190). If the thermostat failed closed, the coolant temperature will pass 180* or 190* without the radiator hose getting hot (nothing's flowing to it, because the thermostat isn't opening), and the fan isn't doing squat to cool the motor. Maybe the fan was on for so long trying in vane to cool down the overheating motor that it got hot.

All of this is for a 2g, but I'd guess the 1g has a thermostat that can fail closed ;).

just throwing this out there but did you bleed you radiator properly to make sure all the air bubbles got out? also check your thermostat like stated above, also make sure that your fan is kicking in when the engine warms up. if your fans not kicking on, then it may be your fan relay and you might have to hard wire it so that it stays on all the time, but its a lot cheaper then a relay:thumb: good luck man:rocks:

Last time i was going 70 was on my way to boston with it, and it didnt over heat during that ride. But it will overheat when its just sitting there.

Its your water pump, I had a car do darn near the exact same thing, when I was moving the car was good to go, AIR was being pushed into the radiator, at a stop however it would climb unless I pushed on the gas...If your pump is going bad, idle RPM is not good enough to create enough of a push/vacume to move the fluid through your car, if it has the plastic impellers those can break but mostly the suck. Your thermostat, pull it off cook that bad boy in a pot of water, get it to a boil and watch for it to pop, if it does not pop then its bad....Get a volt meter/ ohm meter and look at your connections on your thermostat housing...Hope it helps

My fan was constantly on and I got a new fan installed already and it is constantly on as well. It has only started to over heat once since, but I'm replacing the thermostat. Problem should be taken care of by friday.

Searched, and never found anyone with my exact symptoms.

Ok, 99 GSX, 7 bolt, Water pump was replaced at 60k withthe timing belt, im now @ 75k, Car normally sits at half way on the factory gauge, starts to overheat goes 3/4 of the way up, Ill shut it off before it creeps into the red.

Checked for air pockets, still crept up.

Upper radiator hose is Pressurized and hot, Radiator is warm to the touch, lower radiator hose is squishy and cold. I'm thinking the thermostat is stuck closed, but i wanted yalls opinions as well.

Thanks.

Id start with the thermostat. It's a cheap part and easy to replace. Throw a new one in there. Are you sure your fans are working properly?

they were....ill have to check, right now its snowing and icing like crazy, and yea, yesterday its was 75 degrees here

Here's the deal recently my stock fan crapped on it self the blades broke off from the motor and car overheated bad. I switched fans and everything seemed fine. One day it got hot outside I over heated. The next day it was cold again No problems. Then temps are hot outside and bam I'm over heating. I changed the thermo and its still hott. This fan from autozone pulls pretty damn hard. You can feel air being pulled if you put your hand infront of intercooler. When the stock fan fell apart alot of fins on the radiator were bent plus some were already bent this thing is from 90 from the looks of it. Do you all think it could be the bent fins keeping air from flowing completely though the radiator ?

I dont see bent fins in one area alone causing that much of a problem but it probably wouldnt hurt to get a small screwdriver or a pair of tweezers and straighten them out.

Its to damaged to pull out some a pushed in. MY fan went out bad. Plus its just old. My mech doesn't think its the waterpump and the thermo is new so it has to be the radiator right ? I just need to know what all it could be before i spend cash

Get a new radiator.. Stock one's are fairly cheap. You may have even poked a hole when the blades broke... Get a used one from the bone-yard and see if helps you out any.

Good call. Also my friends dad might get killer deals on new stock radiators. If I end up having to shell out close to the price of a Koyo or Fluidyne I'm just going to get one of those.
