OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

Yes, follow Damien's tech guide, that should help you.

Usually overheating at a stop light with temps coming down when you are driving means your fans aren't coming on, or a clog/restriction in your cooling system somewhere. When you push the AC button it should turn on the AC fan (drivers side) regardless of weather the AC belt is hooked up or not.

Since it is summer I am havng the normal overheating isses while on the highway. I have everything taken care of except for making a air dam between the fmic and the radiator. I am wondering if anyone has made one or not. It seems like while driving after the air goes through the fmic it drops down and goes under the car since the factory plastic air dam is no longer in.

I've got a '92 Talon FWD 2 liter non turbo and I'm having some major problems with overheating and some kind of buzzing sound. I was out the other day and just out of nowhere, I heard this really loud whizzing, buzzing sound, it sounded like a weed whacker, then I didn't hear anything for a while. Then on the way back I heard the noise again and it got increasingly louder and and the car started to overheat and stall out as I came to a stop. The car stalled severall times, all when the car was still moving. Finally, I parked the car and popped the hood. I don't recall the fan being on, and because of the antifreeze being so hot, the bottle and hose were shaking and making noise and antifreeze was coming out the overflow to the ground. I had to have it towed back. Could it be a fan, water pump, belt, or something else? Any help appreciated.

Getting hot standing still only is usually an electric fan problem. Getting hot going down the road is usually thermostat, radiator, water pump, restriction in the front of the radiator causing improper air flow etc. Like was said before, check and replace the thermostat. If that doesn't do it then you should look at the radiator closely. Only one time have I seen fans cause problem going down road and not sitting still was when someone hooked them up backward and it dammed the air up. Only one time though.

Good Luck

ok, ive change the radiator, radiator cap and thermostat and the temp gauge still fluctuates, but actually worse than it used to. Basically the synopsis is that ill drive adn the gauge will move up some and then back down, particularly when at a stop. I'm not sure what else i can replace at this point. Some of my friends thought it might be the water pump. Could it be that or not enough coolant in the car?

There is a sensor towards the front of were your temperature sending unit is you may want to try replacing that sensor. Its skipped my mind what its called right now but your problem sounds simialr to mine. Its the sensor that controls your main fan turning on and off

should my ac fan come on to help with cooling at all? i dont think that fan is working at all, as well as my ac doesnt work.

My experience has been that if a water pump goes, it's either good or bad. If it's bad or on it's way out, it usually makes allot of noise prior to give you warning. But it sounds like your still building pressure in the hose lines, can you confirm?

Does the car run allot better when it's cold?
How bad is it overheating?

Did you do a compression check to make sure it's not a head gasket?

im pretty sure there is pressure in the hose, if i run it without the cap, it will overflow. basically it go up to about 3/4 and then back down. usually when im at a stop light. car runs fine when normal or hot, but it worries me that the needle is moving at all. usually just sits in the middle

I'd check the sensor thing. I'm not exactly sure where the temps are taken from, I'd bet there is one for the gauge and one for the idiot light.
Might just spend the cash on an aftermarket and just monitor that.

Only thing I'd wonder is what your ECU was seeing. If it takes it's info from the bad sensor, it might effect things down the road???
Maybe need a pocketlogger to rule that out...

Could be you have a faulty Thermostat. I got one before when I did my girlfriends galant. It blew the waterpump, I replaced it and the thermostat (in a hotel parking lot in 4 hours). It used to do exactly what your describing. I did a bunch of stuff first, but finally just replaced the thermostat again and it went away...

good luck!:thumb:

What could be causing the noise? When I first heard it, it was only for a couple of seconds, then it went away. I was pretty loud the first time. It sounded like a pull back toy car being picked up after being pulled back. As I kept driving, it started making noise again. First it was barely noticeable, but the more I drove, the hotter the engine got and the more noise it made. At first I thought it was something in the drivetrain, but my second thought when I heard it was that one of the fans was broke or something. It only made noise when the car was moving.

I would think along the lines of "card in the bike spokes". Look inside the fan and see if something got sucked in there and is slowing the fan. As Rick stated, the hot at idle means something electric/fan related and with the noise I would start there.

Probably a stray cat in the fans....

Seriously just run straight power to the fans and see if the noise comes on again..

I got a brand new engine in my car. And I over heat. What are some of the causes? Is my front mount blocking the radiator to much? I turn the heat on full blast and it cools down to operating temp. Whats going on here. Is my belt slipping?

It sounds like you might just have some air in the coolant system. Make sure you bleed it really well anytime the system is drained and refilled. Good luck!
