OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

91 Talon AWD TSi, basically stock, new radiator/thermostat/cap/upper hose. After driving the car for more than 10 minutes, whenever I park it coolant (water) comes shooting out the overflow valve - not alot, but enough to make me haveto put a gallon of water (!!) in every 4 days. Any ideas why this could be happening?

TIA

im having the same problem, my fans are turning on, and my tstat is fine and my headgasket is fine since the coolant in the overflow bottle looks pretty green to me... what could be the problem? radiator cap not holding pressure?

Honestly, wouldn't surprise me. I just am kindof wondering about it as I don't overheat unless I run out of coolant, it all clearly leaks out of the overflow tube (when i park, you see it), and there is no smoke whatsoever coming from the exhaust + my oil looks perfectly fine :\

I used some injector cleaner that my friend from schucks had laying around and now my idle surge is gone and the car is running alot better? WTF? OMG Pulls nice and hard too. I'm wondering if it's the water pump or something

Help!?! My 94 1.8 talon lost it's power steering and then it overheated. I got a radiator light, CEL, and battery light all within a 15 minute drive. Could it be the belt that connects the alternator, water pump and power steering pump together, or could it be something else. How else can I diagnose what the problem is. Thanks in advance guys.

Your W/P-ALT belt is broken. Go get a new one at your local auto parts store :)
DON'T run it in it's current form - you'll blow your Head Gasket or warp your head from overheating.

Holy smokes, your right thanks. The serpentine belt is gone. I can't believe I didn't even notice it missing. I was looking at the the radiator and hoses and everything else. Glad it's an easy fix though.

I was driving my GST home from school on Monday when the clamp on my radiator hose broke so I blew coolant everywhere and my car ended up getting hot enough to smoke before I knew what happened. I pulled over and used a clamp off my recirculation tube and vented until I got the the next town where I bought some new clamps. Anyhow, my car definately overheated, but now, ever since that I burn oil. I lost about a quart after driving all the way home which is about 380 miles. Maybe that is normal and I just change my oil enough(2500 miles) not to notice and it is time for an oil change, but I think it burns it now. I think I can kind of smell burnt oil sometimes, but that might be my mind playing tricks on me. Can you burn oil from overheating?

Are you burning coolant as well? Often times when you overheat, it warps the head enough to let oil/coolant leak into the combustion chamber. Try running a compression/leakdown test as well.

if you are running a stock head gasket the shitty material it is made out of can actually be harmed and have the effects of having a blown head gasket, but i bet the head is warped bad enough for the oil passages to leak, like the guy above posted.

you are going to have to pull the head to see if it is warped/blown head gasket and most likely you will have to get the head decked

No, I am pretty sure I am not burning any coolant and I just put a 1G head on this summer so I got a Mistubishi OEM headgasket as well. I will check my coolant levels a little closer to be sure and get back to you as well as do a leak down test.

Is there any other side effects I will notice to a warped head or blown headgasket?

Well symptoms I know of:
-bubbling coolant bottle
-loss of compression
-oil in coolant, coolant in oil
-burning coolant/oil
-rust in cylinders

Since you've obviously can take a head off, maybe you could take it off and check it with a straight edge for straightness. I'm not sure how the weather is in Iowa, but here in MI I'm not going anywhere for the next day or so, so it might be a good opportunity to tear into it.

you should be able to see some signs of it by doing a compression test. but know there arnt any other things that should be affected by a warped head other then loss of power and burning oil/water

My 98 GST Spyder overheats only in 4th and 5th gear above 5000 rpm. I did the water pump and timing belt about 6 months ago because the motor had a little over 100k miles. Car runs good every where else but when I get on it, it overheats only in 4th and 5th. Normally, the temp sits in the center of the gauge, but when I get on it, the needle rises with the rpms above 5k. If I coast after that or go below 4k rpms, the needle goes back to where it was. My guess is an oil consumption at high rpm, and by the way ever since I got the car back in Feb. I have used Mobil1 Synthetic oil and their filter. Any info or input is greatly appreciated. :dsm:

ok, I installed my new profec B II last week and the car is running stronger then ever at 21 psi, After getting the boost settings right, I took it on the interstate and pushed it the max to check the performance, blew a line on the solenoid and hit 30 psi, the car crapped out on me, Made adjustments and got it back out. Next two runs the car leaned out at 21 psi and sounded rough. I increased my fuel and then it was fine, Ran it hard and pulls all the way throug the power band. when I got it home it started stalling out everytime I took my foot off the Gass peddle and then started overheating. Next day and had to adjust my throttle cable to keep the car running and added coolant. Ran fine , 2 days later it overheated severly and the rpms jumped from 1500 to 2400 randomly. all my water was gone. Did a compression check and had good compression all the way across. I have a new thermostat, good radiator, water pump and no leaks. It overheats with regular driving, not boosting it at all.
Any suggestions on this before I start to pull the head to look for problems!!
I am sure somebody has had this problem.

Flush the system. How recent is the water pump or thermostat? Are you blowing any white smoke out of the exhaust?

If not, you have a coolant leak somewhere, I believe.

You blew a head gasket. At least.

he said it wasnt makeing boost.. possiably you messed up your turbo and if you still have a oil/water cooled turbo you may have messed something up.. i would park the car.. flush the coolant and replace it.. change the oil and look for any froth in the oil or brown color.

if it still over heats ect...have a shop perform a leak down test for you and see what happnes.

good luck

Pull the plugs and if one or more of them are white; chances are you blew a head gasket. Also, get a flashlight and peek down in the cylinders and check out the tops of the pistons. If one is bling bling clean then your headgasket blew. These two steps are quick and easy to do.
