OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

Only a few things really to overheating.Check thermostat which I just had to replace yesterday, even those I just changed it 3 month's ago.:p Also check temp sensors and coolant level, and for the hell of it check out your radiator.Feel the bottom hose of the radiator and see if its cold, if its cold then your thermostat is stuck. That should get some things started to figure out what it is.If gets down to the worse theck the headgasket and make sure you have good compression.

Now I was thinking, if it was a blown headgasket, wouldn't there be white smoke and water coming out of the tail pipe?

He's entirely right on with his process of elimination. Also check to see if ya coolant hoses are soft and if they collapse on you. This will definitely be a good sign as well.

Good luck

Thanks for all the replies guys, but I decided not to buy the car in question. I found a 97 GST Spyder that's bone stock, which is what I was looking for, with 46K original miles, that I'm planning on buying next week.

The guy wants $3750 for the Spyder. It seemed like a really good deal to me. I don't think ill be doing an AWD swap, seeing how I know nothing about how to do that. Haha.

All good on the awd swap is the interior and exterior in good condition?I would try push your luck on $3500 but that's still a good price imo, not to high not to low but never hurts to go lower.

The car is extremely clean, the guy who owns it now never drives it in the winter, the car is red by the way, I forgot to mention that. I guess I can try to get it for $3500, although I didn't think that $3750 was overpriced either.

True that but never hurts to keep some money in your pocket.:sneaky:

It's not going to be the fans because they only do you good when you are at a stop or not driving very fast. Use a OEM thermastat, check your sensors.

Any updates on this? I'm having a similar issue with the overheating.

After about 10 minutes the car starts to overheat on the stock gauge. The new water temp gauge i tapped into the radiator hose is only reading about 205-220* when the stock gauge starts to climb/gets to near the top. Which one should I pay attention to?

Ideas as to why it may be overheating; if that stock gauge is correct?

Did you ever figure this issue out? I am having the same overheating problem, and I have also already replaced the HG, radiator, thermostat, rad cap, and water pump. Compression is good across the board, and a leakdown test @ 65 psi turned up nothing.

I've also replaced the coolant temp sensor, and tried running with no thermo, but to no avail.

I verified that my timing is 5* BTDC this morning. I don't know what else to check

Ok, bare with me on this one because it is my first car and I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to engines.

I've checked to make sure my fans were coming on, I've replaced the thermostat, and there are no signs of a blown headgasket. After putting in all new fluids I ran my engine for a good 20 minutes without an issue but once I put the radiator cap back on my temp skyrocketed. Anyone have an idea of what is going on?
