OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

Buy a new Radiator Cap.

Also if the Radiator checks out to be not clogged, hook all the hoses back up, Put coolant back in the system, start the car and leave the cap off until the car reaches operating temp (adding coolant as needed). That way all the air can get out of the system.

If it still keeps overheating then you could have a bad water pump, or you could have a blown head gasket causing you coolant system to be getting pressurized.

Hope you figure it out man.

Thx, i havent had time to unhook radiator and see if its clogged, or do anything else for that matter, but i will definitely start today after work.

Thanks for all the input i will reply back with the results LOL

Well the thing is i had replaced the water pump when i bought it about 4 months ago, brand new.

Could i go bad in that short of time?

It COULD go bad in that amount of time since anything is possible, but that doesn't sound like that is your problem and you didn't say anything about it leaking. Like the others have said, you need to check out the radiator and see if it is clogged. And like LiQUiDx already asked... Do you have any bubbles in the radiator with the cap off and the engine running? If you do, this could be a sign of a head gasket failure.

You could be heat soaking the stock radiator?? Maybe upgrade to a aluminum one.

Or maybe try to run multiple aftermarket electric fans. so both kick on at the same time.

Ok. I have a 98 GSX. I just bought and installed a new punishment radiator and slim fans. and a mishimoto thermostat. I also bought a set of Samco Sport Coolant hoses. Now the issue is. I took it out for the first time this year today and drove maybe 10 miles and almost over heated? I cant think of why this could be. Any suggestions? Maybe i have the fans wired wrong. Does anyone have a diagram of how the wires are supposed to wire into the 2g?

Actualy After i set this post i went out and looked at my fuses and it looks like the fuse isnt good. Hopefully that is it. But no I did not hear the fan that is why i thought maybe it was wired wrong, or maybe the fuse blew. And i am pretty sure i cleared the air from the system.

If you have DSMLink, you can just turn the fans on and see if they go on. Otherwise, try getting it up to 210 or 215 (whatever the switch point is...I forget) and then see if the fan(s) are on.

Did you wire both to go on at the same time? Or is one still an AC fan?

After you figure out if the fans are working, make sure you get all the air out of the cooling system.

Take the radiator cap off start the car let it get up to temperature top off the fluid if needed.

the water pump isnt going to necesarily weep every time one goes bad. the only time it weeps is when the seal around the bearing goes bad. the bearing can go bad without the seal going bad!!

Ok, I tested to see if there was air in the system, and is was good (no air). It is either i messed up and wired something wrong or, i blew the fus. But when I pulled the fuse it looked fine. Tomorrow I am going to get a new fuse just in case, and if that dosnt work i will check the wireing.

OK i just unhooked the radiator, and ran the water hose thru the upper hose. water runs thru it fine and there doesnt seem to be any leaks. So the radiator is good im guessing?

Hows your head gasket? Just thought i'd throw that one in also. A buddy of mine had exactly what you had, replaced everything until we lifted the head. Gasket was shot.

Makes me think head gasket even more if you're pouring out white smoke.

+1 for head gasket, don't let that thing overheat to much you don't want to cause any damage.

Deff sounds like head gasket if its shooting water out of over flow when you rev it this is a sign of engine compression getting into the cooling system if you remove the radiator cap and rev itll shoot water up from there also

i would put my money on a headgasket too. and what better reason to put a good aftermarket metal one in!!! its only a couple hour job on that motor and well worth it to check out combustion hamber and valve condition as well as get a good headgasket in there! good luck!!!!!

k guys i have been over heating proble.put coolant in and it is still doing it swap thermosat and still doing it. i have hear that if i warm the car up with the t cap off. and fill it then it should level out and stay sorta cool. please really need help

Have you flushed out the system-take the radiator out and pressure flush it out, the pressure flush out the block and heater core while the radiator is out.

On the T-stat to aid in burping: drill a .050 hole in the flange and reinstall the T-stat with the spring down..

And don't use just water. Make sure that you're doing the 50/50 mix.

Water pump could be going bad ....
Bet that car is just full of rust and junk in the cooling system. ... or, you popped a HG

Are you reading off of the stock water temp gauge? Or are you clearly overheating?

Yeah stock temp guage...although today I CLEARLY was overheating...Smelled coolant...Temp guage was getting close to burying itself....Opened the hood, Coolant overflow was going insane, put on my welder's gloves and popped the radiator cap open and shot steam out for a good 2 mins.

I think part of the problem is I've just put off getting actual coolant for so long, the water I keep adding evaporates so I just need to keep filling it up. I put in a full gallon of water today. So I was definetly low. As soon as I fill it back up, it doesn't overheat again for a couple days...I bet if I just kept making sure it was filled It wouldn't overheat.

Heat Soaking? not familiar with the term!

Or maybe try to run multiple aftermarket electric fans. so both kick on at the same time.

I was considering doing that with my A\C fan since I don't have A\C the fan just sits there.

I would say change the thermostat and if it still overheats
then get a aluminum radiator. That should fix it.

I plan on it...And I plan on a aluminum radiator too...I was going the Mishimoto route.

You need to have coolant in there as well. It changes the boiling point. Use 50/50 mix and see if that helps. Also you can test your thermostat to see if its opening like it should. Throw it in a pot of boiling water. If it opens and your still overheating, replace the radiator cap too. I doubt its because of your radiator. I would just go ahead and flush your cooling system, replenish with 50/50, replace the radiator cap and thermostat and you should be good.

Thanks for the Tips. I know most of that. I didn't know for sure if coolant had a higher boiling point, but I figured it did because common sense says so, and it would explain why all my water keeps vanishing
