OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

You posted on the wrong section. If you replaced the head gasket, did you take the head to a machine shop to have it resurfaced? If you didn´t then there´s no point in just replacing the gasket, most likely the head is warped. Depending on how much and for how long you overheated, you probably might want to have the block checked. Good luck. :thumb:

Hi,
I have got a Eclipse DSM 1g AWD 1991.
I replaced the head gasket on the engine and several parts.
Now, when I use my car for a long times the coolant increases the temperature near red zone and I understand that the liquid is boiling in the upper radiator hose.
I have replace the following parts:
- radiator, radiator cup
- thermostat
- isc motor
- I have replaced fan motor switch (on the radiator) with a similar hyundai "sonica" sensor.
- I have replaced many times the coolant
- fan relay

I haven't replace the following parts:
- ECU

When I replaced the head gasket I brought the head to resurfaced, adjust and control in a special shop.

It doesen't lose coolant and the fan run regularly when the temperature is raised. The problem occurs when using the car for a long time, as the fan did not take a cool enough.
- When the engine is hot, the upper radiator hose should be under pressure to the touch?
- When the car turn off (and engine hot) the motor fan continues to run for a few minutes, or not?

Thank you very much
Eman

can any person HELP me ?

Thank you very much
Eman

Do a compression check and make sure it's not the head gasket. I heard of Cometics not sealing right if there's a tiny flaw on the surface of the head or block. Is the thermostat new?

I believe the results of a compression test are going to be negligible, as a compression test will only reveal gross leaks in the head gasket. Assuming that you have a good radiator cap and properly set up/sealed overflow bottle (which allows coolant to be sucked back into the engine as the engine cools), if the coolant that was pushed into the overflow bottle is not eventually sucked back into the engine, you almost surely have a head gasket issue.

follow these steps:

1. Allow the engine to fully cool
2. Remove the radiator cap and top off the coolant
3. Replace the radiator cap.
4. Fill the overflow bottle to the Min mark.
5. Drive the car.
6. Allow the engine to fully cool.
7. See if the level in the overflow bottle has returned to Min. If not, either combustion gases have displaced coolant in the block, or your radiator cap of overflow hose is not sealing properly.

Also, if you have the engine at full operating temperature, looks for bubbles in the coolant over flow bottle...

This should help you a great deal!

Your radiator could be plugged up by insects, mud, etc or bent fins. Could be running too lean or detonating too much. Could you have wired the fan to run backwards instead of pulling air through the radiator?

Thank you for your answares.
The fan pushes the cool air from the radiator to the engine.
I replaced the water pump together engine belts
I do not know what to do !!

After your engine has been running for a while and its "overheating", when you shut it off does coolant come out of your reservoir onto the street? You could also try doing a resistance check on your coolant temp sensor.

Try running 100% distilled water with one bottle of Redline water wetter. Unless it gets super cold where your at.

No,
- If shut off the engine the coolant doesen't comes out in the street but remains in the tank, I can hear the boiling on top of radiator hose and a tank.
the indicator of the temperature is approximately near the red zone. If you turn on the engine after a few moments the fan starts to work but not the temperature drops significantly.
Is it normal that when the liquid is hot, the upper radiator hose has a lot of pressure?
- I can not buy "red line products" because in my country is not for sale. I used Castrol 50/50 with distilled water.
I am Italian.
Thank you very much for you help

If I were you this is what I would do:
Remove thermostat, and run engine for approximately 15-20 minutes. After this time it should overheat..according to your gauge.
If not, then your gauge is reading 210 or lower, replace thermostat.
If it's still overheating in your case remove both coolant temperature sensors to test if their values are to spec. If you are not sure I can provide specs. (this is to make sure your gauge is reading properly).
Next step I will guide you through to figure this problem out but please do aformentioned steps.

Also, to everyone reading this post what 97 gst is referring to:
"You didn't mention your water pump being replaced. Also make sure your coolant is properly "burped".
I think what you are trying to say is that the cooling system should be bled of air which is done by idling the engine for 10 minutes or so with radiator cap removed, the burps are bubbles in the system being forced upwards by temperature increases.
As a side note, I am not incredibly literate in the dsm world but in my own experiences when a water pump is beginning to fail it will weep a bit. Then it will become worse. If no signs of coolant leaks do not suspect water pump failure....-chris

Exactly right. Or you can squeeze the bottom radiator hose a few times with the cap off. It works pretty good.

id check the water pump and also when u replaced the headgasket did u do it or did someone else do it. i ask this because maybe when the person scraped the old gasket off that they plug a water port on the block but that just my $.02.

I bet it doesn,t overheat while it is sitting in the drive way or idleing , if you have replaced everything and bleed the system out ,the only thing it can be is your block surface is warped . I had this problem last year changed everything made sure everything was wroking proper .I figured out the problem when I got feed up and pulled the motor then had the deck of the block checked ,5 thou warp . good luck.

A FMIC will put heat some heat on your radiator. Do you have one?
You may need aftemarket fans to help cool your engine.

You say your radiator has been replaced. How about the rest of the engine? Get a flush and check your hoses for leaks under pressure.

Everyone's wondering about your water pump. How old is it?

If you have a FMIC or other power mods on your engine, a better radiator cap will help. Stock is .9.
Get a 1.1 or 1.3. Get one meant for a Evo 8.

OKAY!!! i jux did a complete radiator coolent flush last month...and today on the way home frm pickin up my mom at the store...my car overheated...i didnt even notice it till i was lik 100 yard frm my house:banghead:...the bar went pass the redline....hope nothin went wrong...tat the second time it happen...there no leak...can some1 tell me why it overheated

when you flush the system did you remove the Air from the system?? you have to bleed all the way out after filling up the car with coolant by pressing on the lower hose until all the air comes out.

check your fans if they are kicking on
check your system if it has coolant inside ( dont try it while the car is hot)
check your radiator cap if its sealing properly
check if you have bubels in the coolant or if you have foam in the coolant or if there is Oil in the coolant then most probably the head gasket
check the thermostat if its stuck open or closed

when did you change your water pump ?

check all the above and post back checking all the above would take max 15 minutes

good luck

I have replaced the radiator with a used(OEM) but controlled pressure in a shop.
I have put on my car a new thermostat (original Mitsubishi) 2 years ago together water pump and engine kit belts, but after the work I have done only 300/400 Km.
I have decided to do a great job on my car when I realized that it was damaged the head gasket.
I don't know FMIC ?
Is it normal that when the liquid is hot, the upper radiator hose has a lot of pressure?
Could I know if the ECU/ECM can be responsible for this or not?

Thank you very much for your help
