Cam seals install question

OK so i am researching on how to change out my cam seals because they are leaking. So I'm confused on a few parts, do i need to compress the tensioner with a tensioner tool or do i not have to? And if i need to compress the tensioner, where can i get the tool, i heard Mitsubishi doesn't make them anymore. Also, I'm not sure when i do it, a couple sites said to have the timing marks pointing to each other and some others say to put them at 12 o'clock.

If you can't tackle the timing belt portion, you might want to get some help doing it, probably by someone who has done it before. Do you have a local club down there with some people who have done some work like that?

Well I have a spare timing belt tensioner tool if your interested. I would just take the timing belt off if it were me. How long has it been since it was replaced? Are you sure it is the cam seals leaking and not the valve cover gasket or something like that? When the motor is at tdc, the dowel pins on the cam gears are pointed at 12:00. There are also grooves on the end of the cam gears that will line up horizontally, even with the top of the head when the motor is at tdc. It will make sense when you see it. Check out vfaq and the tech section, they have some good articles.

It all depends on how you want to do it. Are you planning on taking the whole timing belt off? Or just using the timing tensioner tool with ziptied cam gears? If you plan on taking the whole timing belt off you will not need the timing belt tensioner tool. You can just use a big c-clamp to compress the tensioner. And following the vfaq should be all you need.

Here is kind of a example of how you might ziptie the cam gears so you dont have to take the whole timing belt off. But you will need the tensioner tool for this.

Thanks for the reply. The timing belt was replaced a year and a half ago, (about 10k miles or so ago) when i bought the car, supposedly. But i am planning on doing it soon, just have to wait for the funds to build up. Anyways, I'm pretty sure its my cam seals and not my valve cover gasket because i just replaced it last months, no leaks, and also when i take off the timing cover on the top, i can see an oil stream from where the cams are all the way down the side of my engine.

I think what they meant was that you may want to find someone to help you in person, rather than just getting advice off the web. There are subtle things that may not always come across in text.

As to your question, you don't HAVE to use the tools, but they really help. You need both a tensioner tool, and the small tool to properly align the eccentric pulley, although you can work around it... but it's more work and harder to do correctly.

Jay Racing sells a timing tool kit with 3 tools (including a special piece that holds the gears in place), or you can buy them separately.
