Has anyone had any issues where when you tighten down your exhaust cam and it wont turn without putting some extreme force behind it? I rebuilt the head, used my same old cams but for some reason when i tighten atleast 2 caps down it will not turn. Im not sure what the deal is but i was thinking just enlarging where the cam sits and the cap just enough to let it turn. ?? This is on a 92 eclipse. Am i missing something?

bleed your lifters

I have done that already actually its just as soon as it seens down all the way with a cap on it, it wants to freeze up. I tried this even without rockers on just to make sure. and sure enough.. its very very tight.

are you putting the right caps on the right cam in the right order, are you over torquing it.

For front most cam (towards front of car) the caps i have are as follows

2-1, E5, E4, E3, E2, E1

Im not torquing the bolts at all actually. I turn the bolt just till it stops and no matter what 2 caps i do it just doesnt turn..

What was the reason for the head rebuild, did you snap or jump timing by any chance?

Thats pretty much what happened actually. I bought it from a preacher guy that had just rebuilt the whole engine and the exhaust cam timing gear bolt sheared off and you know what happens after that. So i rebuilt the head with new valves and everything just cant figure this little part out. Im guessing he didnt check it so maybe thats why bolt sheared?

it may be warped, might want to get some plastigauge and check the clearances, as to how to do that i dont know.

also how do the bearing journals look.

Im only have trouble with the exhaust cam. Intake is fine. Turns like silk. Journals look fine from what i can see. I have actually put on another camshaft incase this one was warped but i get the same case. Hard to turn. So im leaning towards something is up with the caps. Maybe i should just buy new caps and be done with it? If so any ideas where to get some?

Try installing only the end caps, or one cap at a time if you can until you find the one or two that are binding. It does sound like the cam is warped or bent.

I have tried just the end caps with the same result. I tried another cam with the same result unless they are both warped. Weirder things have happened i guess. Im thinking maybe i will just enlarge the journals a hair. Worse case is i mess them up and have to buy news ones. :ohdamn:

Is the head on the block or is it sitting on a bench or something. Will it spin all the way around? Or does it end up stopping completely?

the 2-1 should hold the cam seal right behind the cam gear..

looks like you have the cam tower caps backwards...

try from the cam gear back....
