oil pump hard to turn

my oil pump has always been putting out great oil pressure on the guage since i bought it about 30k miles ago, my pistons just took a dump so i am doing a rebuild/stroker. my oil pump seems rather hard to turn and i never noticed this before. is this normal?

You should be able to turn it with your fingers.

If it doesn't and your not running 100 weight oil you should check it out.

I can turn it with my fingers but it feels like resistance. i always ran mobile1 10w30. i might take it apart and see what the problem is

You'll have to be the judge of how much resistance it too much. Is it smooth turning otherwise? If it was just a little stiff but turned smoothly and you didn't notice anything in your oil I wouldn't worry too much if it was on the car. Since your rebuilding it wouldn't hurt to check it out and measure everything, in fact it might be a little foolish not to.

Be VERY careful with this, I recommend dropping your oilpan and examining the rear balance shaft. My oil pump gear was REAL hard to turn. After I dropped the oilpan, I found a shredded rear balance shaft bearing sitting in it, and noticed that the rear balance shaft was just bouncing around everywhere beating up the block (and making weird noises during high revs). Potentially could be very very bad. I recommend replacing the whole front case along with the oil pump. Don't take a chance.

my balance shafts are removed and the front case is off the engine already.

Don't chance it then. I would get a new front cover. Jackson sells them pretty cheap.
