2G Cam choice for 2.3 hx40 auto 6bolt FP3 vs HKS 272??

As the title states, I’m looking for which set of cams that would be a better fit for a street driven 2.3 auto with a HX40/BEP .55 combo. I have in my possession both sets of cams, the FP3s and HKS 272s. I do know the FP3s are a “stroker” cam and I’m leaning towards them but the HKS set is proven for decent power as well. Any input will be appreciated.

Just some input. I am running HKS 264/272 combo in my STOCK 90 GSX. Top end isn't tuned yet but link says I am running out of injector (133% IDCs). I feel they will run to 7000-7500 but seems like that is it. You can't even really hear the cams in the car when it is running and it drives like a stock normal car other than I am getting fuel cut it seems above 6k, so she needs a set of bigger injectors. That is in a 2.0L not a stroker.

The HKS 272 is a small cam by today's standards on a 2.0L with a 16G. A 2.3L with HX40 will be seriously undercammed with them. The FP3 is extremely close to the HKS 272, so not going to be any better.

I would like to caution using the HX40 in a .55 BEP housing, from experience. Justin and I have talked about this problem. The .55 is such a small area for all of the hot exhaust gases to come thru that when I ran E85, I did this to 3 turbo's in those housings. For some reason, Justin had never seen one do what I did on a HX35, but the 40's just didn't like them. Here is ONE of my turbo shafts. I snapped one completely in two and destroyed another from heat. He told me my oiling was spot on, as he never saw any thrust surface wear, and I was feeding from the OFH. I have switched to T3 now.
A picture is worth 1000 words so I will let it speak.......this WAS on E85 tho.

Thank you very much for the specs of the cams. I do understand that these cams are on the smaller side. It’s just what I have on hand at the moment. I would rather run a smaller cam due to me not being able to really let the hx40 breathe due to the small turbine housing and the auto is laggy around town as it is unless you are on a smaller turbo. Once I go t3 there will be another conversation started. I just want to get my feet wet here.

Ive seen the past threads you posted and many comments regarding this issue. You are the reason why I did contact Justin about this .
I purposely used the 10 blade turbine to allow more exhaust to help bypass, in which I was told it made no difference really . Justin also took some more meat off of the turbine blades to allow even more exhaust to “slip” by. Will it cause lag probably but it should still be fun to drive until I move up. This car won’t be a track monster ever. I just want a somewhat decent shitbox cruising the town . Added pic below for reference. I know I can’t max out. I only want to optimize my current options effectively.

Jimmy, my HX40 auto car is a blast to drive. Laggy.....yeah but once boost hits, hang on. Boost almost comes in full when the car hits 2nd (33lbs) so I'm not blowing the tires off at the start. I am on a stock converter and my nitrous isn't ready to go yet. Glad you were aware of the issue and looks like maybe a REMEDY too!

You really wouldn't want a high rpm camshaft setup for a stroker engine that's not going to be able to mechanically sustain the high rpm's that the camshafts become efficient at, you would always be driving around in the inefficient area of the camshafts powerband.

Fp2 plus stock intake should do great , and not complicate for stall /flash

From my experience many run a very aggressive cam that is overkill for there set up and actually suffer for it. I ran hks 272's for years and loved them. We also run a hks 264/272 in buddy Hy35 powered car that we added overlap to bring it on in the midrange. That car its wicked nasty in the midrange. I myself regret my cams greatly BC288's. They are a old design and very aggressive and I plan to move down to a less aggressive cam.
