Buying a 2g with a 6 bolt swap - Need advice.

Alright, I am very close to buying a 2g gst with a 6 bolt swap. The guy told me the only problem with it is that it runs slightly rich. He said it runs rich because he can see a tiny bit of black smoke from the tailpipe under boost.

Mods - 6 bolt engine with no upgrades other than a garrett t28 turbo. He claims the engine is rebuilt with roughly 4k miles on it. The car itself has 90k on it.

My question is.. is this normal for a DSM? I have done a bit of research on running rich and have seen some threads that say its never normal and others that say its quite normal. I'd like to hear it here from the experts.

I'd also like to know of a good way to fix this? Can I fix it without buying a SAFC? He did have the coolant temperature sensor unplugged.. Could that have been causing a consistent rich condition under boost?
He said the only code thrown was from the coolant temp sensor.
What else should I check besides vacuum/boost leaks?
How rich does the engine need to be running before engine damage may have been done? I read a few threads stating that a prolonged rich condition will wash out the piston rings.. I am hoping the light smoke is normal because this makes me not want to buy the car. Also, remember the smoking is only under boost.

If it is still on stock injectors than you won't need to do any tuning to it. Just check for boost leaks, throw some fresh bpr7es plugs in it and it should run great.

@iugrad92turbo.. Tell me about it man.. I am skeptical of everyone.. I am just hoping everything on it is how he says it is because he lives over 2 hours away and the last thing I want is to be stranded.

It is not normal, i am just confident that it if most likely a boost leak as long as the car has stock injectors.

@deviousgst .. He didn't properly swap the sensors out.. I think he used the sensor that had the wrong plug before. He said he got it fixed.

I will get the car friday and do a boost leak test asap.

I just realized that the coolant temp sensor is not hooked up. That will make it run rich for sure. He probably used the 1g head and thermostat housing and didn't have the right sensor because the plugs are different. The right sensor will fit that housing if you buy it from a parts store.

Thanks for the replies.. I'm really hoping its only that sensor.. I will check it out.. I knew the sensor could make it run a little rich but I didn't know if it was a consistent rich or just a slight richness before the car warmed up.. Anyway, hopefully everything's good.. I will update when I actually have the car in my possession.
