Hi guys, I recently got a BSE kit from partsdinosaur.com Dealing with the guy was great, everything seems top notch. However, I noticed in an installation video, that some kits come with a "stubby shaft" with an oil groove, as does the original Balance shaft. Mine did not. To my eyes, it just looks like this oil passage was only used to deliver oil down the balance shaft, and it shouldn't be necessary. But I wanted to make sure before my whole engine was put back together.

Any insight would be really helpful. Thanks.

For the love of god dont use the partsdinosaur shaft. Not bashing ( though i should) but i went through the same thing as you. Everyone said it would fail but not one single picture on the net of it. I had .006 clearence like suggested and mine locked up after 1 minute of running. Sent metal through my whole motor, put me down for a month, and cost me lots of money. Ill try and find a pic but idk if i have one. Honestly i think i may still have the parts, if i find them ill post pics. DONT DO IT. Go oem stubby/cut stock shaft.

That groove oils the stub itself and the oil pump will either lock up or be severely damaged without it. Get a Mitsu stub shaft and use the rest of the kit you already have.

DO NOT USE THE SOLID SHAFT!!!!!!

I spent 6 months trying to diagnose my metal in my engine from having one of the solid stub shafts. Back before I knew as much about these cars, the machine shop I had doing my engine ordred it. It was for a dodge daytona and I had no idea that was the reason why I kept finding metal in my oil. The shop argued with me I pulled the engine 3 times trying to find out why. It took a memeber here on tuners to actually come to my house and check out what I had going on and he had seen that and corrected me on the shops mistake. The oil pressure was so high on that solid shaft it cause the gearing to force its way into the oil pump casing and was causing very fine metal in my oil. Lucky for me It was a 15 dollar fix from extreme psi and I never had a problem with the engine since. I did how ever just have a 1g engine fail because of the same thing. I had no idea and bought the car that way and tore it down and once again the shaft was solid. The only thing I can come up with is the metal traveled from there over to rod bearing 4 which sees the least amount of oil and cause the bearing to start to wear improperly and make contact.

Nothing like a full groove bearing that started life as a solid flat bearing.

Holy shit Jake, that same thing happened to my buddys fresh motor and I couldnt figure out why..

OP: If you're on a tight budget do what I did! Cut the balance shaft into a stubby and either weld the oil hole shut or tap it and put a bolt in it. DO NOT use the solid shaft!

You should always research thoroughly every part before you decide to purchase, for the most part everything has been done, bought, modded and tried and 90% of it is in the forums' historicals if you will.

will save you money and open you eyes for other options for upgrade paths that you may have not been familiar with.
