In the past week I have torn apart some front cases. I would have thought by now even the newest DSM'er would have found the info on what stubby shaft to run.

I know this is not a new topic to cover by any means. :banghead:

STAY AWAY from the ungrooved stubby shaft!!!!

So make sure the BSE Kit you buy has the OE Mitsubishi stubby shaft. Unless you just want to spend the cash on a new front case/oil pump.

Has anyone replaced the non-grooved stubby shaft with an oem grooved one with the motor intact and installed in the engine bay? It's been a long while since I rebuilt the motor and have only started it up a few times with no issue. Started to get interested in my DSM again and came across this thread. IIRC, I used the cheap non-grooved stubby and now want to replace it with the correct part before I ruin the motor, but don't really want to tear into it unless I really have to.

By the pump case do you mean the case that encloses the gears where the pickup tube bolts to? So no need to remove the entire front case, correct? Excuse my noobness I feel like I'm starting all over relearning this motor again.

Thanks for replying. That's what I feared. I really didn't want to pull the front case off and thought there might be a way to just remove the stubby shaft. I guess there is not enough room in the block to unbolt the gear housing eh? Looks like another weekend of redoing stuff I didn't do right the first time, haha.

That's what I call the "In Car BSE" From what I understand it a PITA to get the front shaft out with the engine in the car.

The only draw back is about the 5lbs of weight from leaving in the BS.

No reason to flip the rear/oil pump shaft bearing, the oil supply for that bearing is through the rear BS. There is no oil galley in the block to feed it.

So I'm doing my build and the bearings on the balance shaft are shot, do I needed to buy new bearings or can i just buy a stubbie shaft and freeze plug and leave out the bearings?

You cannot leave out the front bearings without somehow or another blocking off the oil ports from the front balance shaft bearings to the main gallery or else you will destroy your engine in short order. The rear doesn't matter unless you're using a turned-down rear shaft rather than a stubby shaft.

I am going to eliminate both if possible and leave the gear on the crank so I don't need a spacer. I just called mitsubishi and they don't have access to the stubbie by the part number in original post and they want 90 bucks for the 3 bearings so eBay here I come Mitsubishi Eclipse Eagle Talon Balance Shaft Eliminator Kit DSM 4g63 4g64 Bsek | eBay , [ame=http://m.ebay.com/itm/380868043477?nav=SEARCH]Mitsubishi Eclipse Eagle Talon Balance Shaft Eliminator Kit DSM 4g63 4g64 Bsek | eBay[/ame] no mobile address is this all I need and will this one work even if it's not mitsubishi part?

I have no idea whether that kit will work or not. I know for a fact that Mitsu parts will work. That is all up to you.

Chances are it will be fine.
