BOV Atmosphere--how to undo? (Previous owner installed it.)

I've had my DSM 2g GST (with 2.5" cat-back and a BOV) for 3 years now. I've had a CEL for that entire time. It's been mostly camshaft or crankshaft position sensor, but it's now switched to P0170: Fuel Trim.

The car stalls when I put the clutch in and let the RPMs drop, almost every time.

The previous owner had a BOV installed and I'm pretty sure it's set to vent to atmosphere. (It looks like a little horn, and it makes a decently loud sound, but I've heard recircs can make the noise too?) If anything, I'm guessing the stalling is indicative of venting to atmosphere.

I'm getting really tired of nearly killing myself having to feather the throttle when I put the clutch in to keep the car running.

What do I need to do, as a total newb, to recirc my BOV? Or should I just remove it entirely? Would I be better off having a mechanic do it for me? Is it difficult at all? I don't care about the noise anymore, since she's at 140,000 and I want to keep her around still, but I am oh-so-tired of this stalling issue.

Thanks for tolerating yet another BOV question. I know there are bunches on the board, but I just don't know how to CHANGE this situation, since I didn't install it to begin with.
 
Well it sounds like you have one of those cheesy BOV like the TurboXS or something... The best way I can tell you to recirculate is look around and find what brand bov you have. Then, search the web and see if that company make a recirculation kit, all this does is give you a fitting on the opening of the bov onto which you can attach the rubber hose the goes from the bov to the intake pipe. If they dont make one, then I suggest you dump that bov and get yourself a 1G bov and attach the recirc rubber tube, and voila! you are back to being recirculated.

Look at the pics in my thread, the rubber hose going from the chrome HKS bov to the intake is the tube needed to recirculate. VERY easy.
 
Its just a tube that goes back into the intake. I just had ace thread me a pipe that screwed into my blow off valve, then I recirculated it. Costed me 50cents

What is the stock option? Like, how did it come?

Is there a "diverter valve" or some such?

I'm basically looking for the least mechanical option to kill this problem and I think stopping the vent to atmosphere nightmare will solve the bulk of my problems.

It just depends on the brand/type of BOV you have. If it's a Greddy or HKS, there are recirculation kits available. If it's a TurboXS or other, you may be out of luck.

The stock configuration is a recirculation style. It has to be, due to the MAS being before the BOV.

The term diverter valve is usually used when referring to a valve that recirculates back into the intake tract. However, most people use the terms blow-off valve and diverter valve interchangeably, with the qualifier "recirculating" usually attached; i.e. a recirculating BOV or a VTA [vent-to-atmosphere] BOV.

Does the car have a lightened or aluminum flywheel, by chance? That is another common cause of stalling when the clutch is in.

I think it's a stock flywheel.

My question about the stock configuration was more basically if you "remove" the BOV, what goes in its place?

It's a chrome horn looking thing; looking up pictures, it looks suspiciously like a TurboXS... If I remove it, what's involved? What goes in its place? Was there a stock "BOV" that just recirculated?

Carbon buildup in your IAC could also cause this phenomena you speak of when you press in the clutch.

You don't want the stock piece. Show us what you have, and we'll recommend the "best" alternative.

The stock BOV is made of plastic. It tends to leak boost since it isn't very strong. Some Evo's have BOVs that are a drop in replacement for the stock one, but depending on how your BOV is attached, the stock fitting has probably been removed.
 
So after inspecting it, there's definitely a tube going back to the intake, right?

It looks like it might be recirculating already?

Nope, That is not recirculating. The line on the top of the BOV is the vacuum source that goes to the intake manifold. That is always in use on any kind of BOV set up. The recirculating part, is the huge funnel looking thing on that BOV. A normal set up would route a tube from that funnel to the white cape on your actual intake pipe, which is right in front of the BOV.

Your best bet is to put that in the garbage and get some kind of hard upper intercooler pipe and a new bov.

Look at the greddy bov with the greddy uicp or the dejon tool uicp kits.
 
Find someone to weld a proper flange onto that piece of pipe where the current BOV is, bolt up a 1G BOV and then rumage around at AutoZone or O'Reilys for a 1-1/2" ID radiator hose with the right bends in it that can be trimmed down to let you recirculate it.

This is my 1G BOV with a recirc pipe back to the intake. It's custom IC piping, but the idea is the same. I found a radiator hose at Autozone with a 90 degree bend and just cut the ends to length. (On a running car, there will be another small line coming off the BOV going back to the intake manifold to activate it, which is what yours has.).

BTW - I don't think that is why you have stalling issues though. Check into some of the other suggestions for that; there are lots of causes that I would put first on a list before the BOV, unless it's leaking like a giant hole. A good place to start would be the camshaft and crankshaft position sensor CELs that you've been seeing for 3 years. :)

The easiest solution would be to pick up a stock 2g BOV and run it for the time being. Your stock ecu calculates it's fuel trims and compensates for that unmetered air that the BOV relieves into the intake pipe. While some cars might be able to get away with it, it is generally bad practice to Vent to atmosphere on a car hat uses a Mass airflow sensor.

Good points... but if it's a stock setup, the air from the BOV is metered.

And it looks like that pipe has been modded (I think) for the aftermarket BOV, so installing the much better 1G instead of the 2G wouldn't be any more work or more expense.

So how hard is an install of a 2g stock BOV? I'm seeing one for about $100 new...

$100? How bout I sell you my 1g bov that will fit DIRECTLY into your stock piping for 55 shipped. That should be VERY easy and convenient for you. All you do is take off the bov you have now, then slide in this adapter WITH the 1g bov attached to it already. Connect the recirculation pipe and the intake manifold line and your done. BAMM!! Holds boost like a champ ;)
 
Is this guy for real? We have like 10 different ppl and a bunch of pics WITH diagrams and he still cant do a simple little task! C'mon man, one of your first posts gave an option to have it 'professionally' done, maybe you should go that route or you might end up breaking something...just a thought.

BOV air is "unmetered" air, as it is not going through the mass airflow sensor. The ecu knows to compensate for the BOV purge.

Also, this looks to a be stock 2g car. If you'd like to run a 1g bov, then you will have to purchase a 1g atapter flange, as the 2g stock plastic pipe does not have a flange (uses a worm clamp to hold the BOV in place).

On a stock setup...since the mass airflow sensor sits directly after the air intake filter (the only way to get air into the engine as far as I know), and before the BOV, how is it that the BOV can vent air from the intake tract that hasn't gone through the MAS?
