Bog at WOT

Okay, I have searched for the problem diagnosis and found a few helpful threads, but heres the story of my car.

I bought it a few months back torn apart. The only thing that was missing was a turbo. Yeah maybe a dumb idea but I talked to a lot of people who new the guy so for some reason I went along with it that it would run. It did, perfectly once I threw in an Evo 3 16G. Anyway, I didn't have a wastegate to start because I wanted an external and I thought Slowboy was sending me one with the turbo, thats what the guy made it sound like on the phone. I drove it for a while carefully, not to overboost, from time to time I had the urge and it overboosted, hence where the name came from on the cardomain.

Once I had the wastegate installed it would run 15 pounds just like I wanted, but it started to bog as I accelerated, not horribly, it still scoots pretty good, but it would just cut out then go again on and off through the rpms. I got a check engine light, had it checked and its an o2 sensor I believe the one after the cat (I don't have one though). Spark plugs and wires brand new before turbo even went in. Can the o2 sensor cause that because once in a while it won't cut through 1st, sometimes 2nd, then will in 3rd. My apologies for long winded post, but I know you guys like to know about the car before you help diagnose.

What are you using to datalog? What spark plugs are you using? Have you done a boost leak test? Have you done a compression test? What turbo? What wastegate? Venting your BOV? How much boost? What are you using to control it? Have you done a boost leak test?

Yeah WOT, it stays at 15 psi when it bogs. Stock injectors, but I could have sworn I read many times stock injectors and fuel pump can handle 15-16 pounds on the Evo3. Was I mistaken?

Have you done the basics, checked for boost leaks, etc? Have you recently put in a new fuel pump because sometimes bad seals will do this also. Do you have a WBO2 in the rear O2 or just no sensor at all to send a signal to the ECU?

Oh sorry I forgot to mention, I have done a boost leak test, I fixed the one at the J pipe I had. I have an o2 sensor there, but the CEL was for the o2 sensor. Stock fuel pump, little broke right now, will be getting a new one and bigger injectors, but I thought for now it would be okay.

Well I was going to try evoscan, I have everything I need but currently can't get it to work properly.

Get a datalogger ASAP. Without knowing what is going on in your engine, we can sit here and try the shotgun approach to solving your problems, but if you can tell us that your injector duty cycle is X%, and your TPS is at Y%, etc. it'll make things a lot easier.

Well I can't figure out why evoscan doesn't work. Anyone know anything about the program, none of the threads I found here really helped me out. It doesn't smell like gas. I would have bought dsmlink, but I found evoscan and the price was too good to not check it out.

My apologies, I read your whole post before I thought about what you were talking about, the o2 sensor smelling like gas?

What does a fuel rail have to do with bogging? See if what leaks? Smell what to see if it smells like gas?

I don't, unfortunately. If you can find any threads dealing with hooking Evoscan up or getting it running correctly, feel free to post in that thread, outlining your problem and what you've done so far. If all else fails, see if the makers of Evoscan can help you out.

what are you gapping your spark plugs at? is it like a fuel bog or quick misfire? you might be having spark blowout? But you should definitely get a log up

Again, what does having a bad fuel rail have to do with bogging? If you're just guessing, then stop posting. If you know for a fact that a bad fuel rail can cause bogging issues, please feel free to elaborate how it can.

I gapped them to the spec it said in the manual, I don't recall what that was. I honestly am not sure, maybe I'll get new plugs and see, if no fix I just have an extra set . It has been a while since I drove it but there was never really any gas smell when driving. It stinks when standing behind it, but that would be from not having a cat, no?

You're making statements as if you KNOW for a fact that it's his fuel rail. I'm just trying to find out why you're so positive that's the problem.

OP, get Evoscan up and running and give us some information on what the car's doing when you experience the bogging. If everything else as far as ignition and boost control/leaks are covered, then a datalog is the best way of telling what's going on.

I think you misread my post. I noticed I mentioned stock fuel PUMP, a little broke right now, but will get a new one soon. You must have read that like the pump is broken or misread and thought I said fuel rail.

I actually just organized all my evoscan crap and will try to get a log in if it works sometime this week hopefully tomorrow.

if you gapped the plugs at .031 you may want to try .026-.018

I'm having the same exact problem as the OP. So if theres a fix found I'd love to hear it. I'm pretty much pointing to my MAS at this point which I will be replacing on Friday. I have a really small TD04 HL Turbo.

So far the things I've done:
-Boost Leak Test [Found a big on on my old SMIC, but replaced it with a like new one. No leaks]
-Replaced spark plugs AND wires (even after they were already new)
-Went from 255LPH -> 190LPH [Don't have AFPR]
-Replaced FPR
-Replaced Fuel Filter

no luck so far, so I'm changing the MAS.

Theres not that many mods. I'll list what I do have.

-TD04HL (Auto Turbo) [boosting 12PSI]
-Ebay Intake piping with K&N Filter head
-Upper Intercooler piping all the way down to SMIC.
-Ebay Greddy type RS Blow Off Valve Knock Off [No leaks though]
-Stock Injectors
-190LPH Fuel Pump

Everything else is pretty much stock.

Even so, did you really think about what you were posting?? How could a fuel rail be bad? its basically just a pipe...



I am thinking the car is running rich when it switches to the WOT map. This could be cause by a number of things: boost leaks, spark plugs/wires, coil pack, bad front o2, bad mas, among others.

I would first re-check and triple check for boost leaks.

Check the plug gaps and make sure your getting spark.

A logger would give you a good idea if your o2 is messing up. Also, see if you can find a dsm friend close by and try out his mas (and coil pack if needed)
