Wellp you guys I think I finally did it. I half expected it to happen but I just want some confirmation from the pros (that would be you guys :thumb:). Today I drove my car and everything was fine up to the point where I had to accelerate to match the speed zone. Once I attempted to make boost.. well nothing happened. Period. I could hear my turbo spinning but it was making a totally new sound, it sounded like a damn saw chewing through some shit. I imagine that it was grinding pretty hard so needless to say I baby it all the way home and get out to pop the hood. Everytime I revved it alot of white smoke from around where my turbo is would just rush out like no other and the noise seemed to be coming from it. Dare I say its time to upgrade?

My question is can I drive my car like this? Will it put further damage to my car if I do? Are there any specific oil leaks I should look for since this happened?

This is my only means of transportation and it may be a few weeks before I am able to buy another turbo and getting it put on is another story that will have to wait through some weather.

I would start buy checking your oil feed and oil return lines, but if it sounds bad it might not be a good idea to keep driving.

You can also remove your intake pipe and check the turbo visually. The turbo should not have much movement (the wheel) up and down/side to side or back and forth. Also if you see any part of the wheel that is damaged then you know what it is already.

ya check the turbo. If you keep driving with the blades hitting the compressor housing they could break off and cause more damage to the engine.

X2, the more you drive, the more metal you will be pushing through your system, especially if you can hear it grinding! Its a good idea to park it for now.

Listen to jusmx141. He rebuilt many of the turbo's being run by members on here. To say he knows his stuff is an understatement! If you ask him really nicely, he might be able to hook you up with a replacement , upgrade, or repair yours if it isn't already a lost cause. But most importantly, stop driving it! A rental car is still cheaper than an engine replacement.

Bingo! That is the answer I was looking for you guys. I really REALLY appreciate the response. Thanks a load. I definitely have plans for replacing it.. now I just gotta get the cash and find me a nice 16g or something :rocks:.

I would just look for a 14b for now and then re-sell it later down the line unless you have the mods where you're going to feel a difference with a 16g. 14lbs on a 14b is going to be the same as 14lbs on a 16g. Plus you can get a good 14b for a lot cheaper so you'll be on the road quicker.

Agreed. Sucks to have your DD down and out, just get her up and running then upgrade.

You'll soon learn that having another car as a DD is much better because then you can take your time with your build.

Yeah, it's definitely a bummer. But honestly I reacted in a completely different way than I thought I would when it blew LOL. It lasted alot longer than I expected even with my abuse. The turbo had 174k miles on it so I mean it did good. But anyways I'll have the money shortly for a replacement and I found a small 16g within my price range. I would buy a 14b but it wouldn't be much of an upgrade and I wanted to just go ahead and have the turbo I want ahead of time so I dont have to repeat the process. I'm not just doing it for insta-power LOL, it's just part of future goals and running it on low boost is what I planned on doing for a little while until I finish the supporting parts up.

Just as long as you don't think you're going to gain 50hp by slapping a different turbo on there with stock fuel then it sounds like a plan. :thumb:

Hahahaha no way. I'm not looking to gain power from throwing a 16g on there right now. I'm looking to replace my blown one and do some low boost :thumb:. I don't plan on upping the boost until I have installed my walbro 255, afpr, injectors, and probably a safc. Oh and I'll probably get a wideband to boot.

By the way.. Here is an update. I just removed my intake pipe and took a look at my wheel and shaft. The shaft has alot of play in every direction imagineable, there is a good bit of oil and the wheel looks a bit chipped on a blade or two.

As far as S-AFC, they get the job done at mild mods like the ones you just named. I made 307whp at 20psi on pump with just supporting mods on a small 16g, my buddy just dynoed 293 at 19psi with a small 16g as well. For about those HP goals it's fine. However, let me strongly suggest to look at least into DSM Link V3 LITE. You can get the ECU socketed and everything for about $400 shipped and it's definitely wayyyyyyyy better than an SAFC!

As far as the turbo, yep, it's definitely gone. Just stop the car till you can get another turbo or rebuild that one. Speak to Justin, I'm sure he can help you out a lot in this situation, after all it is his field of expertise. :)

Yeah I've looked into DSM link a good deal and it looks amazing. I'm just not sure where I'm going to go with that particular area just yet. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it I guess :p. I definitely like the numbers you named off to me as my goals are right around that area, atleast as far as whp goes :D.

Look into safcs a little before you buy one, if you buy dsmlink later down the road that safc becomes completely useless. It's in your best interest to just save up and buy link then waste your money on a safc.

I would still get DSM Link though. It's not hard to learn it and you can start messing with it yourself little by little. Here is a link to my dyno thread, if you want to check it out:

I'll be sure to keep that in mind. Who knows maybe I'll dig deep and get link haha. I'm feeling pretty good about getting to work on my car even though the weather sucks. I just hope to get her running soon then I can start throwing some parts at it :hellyeah:

Just keep us posted bro, we'll give you a hand on whatever it is you may need it on. :hellyeah:
