So I believe I blew my motor tonight. I was taking a right turn and punched it up to a little past 5k, and it sounded like my whole motor just fell apart, like imagine a coffee can filled with marbles and rocks being shaken up, so I coasted to the side of the road. I was positive there would be pieces of block in the road behind me, to my surprise, there wasn't. The motor started smoking white smoke from the head, i noticed it most from the injector side. The car wouldn't turn over, but the battery and electronics all worked fine. I took out the dipstick and noticed ZERO oil on it. And I opened up the oil cap to take a quick look inside, and I saw what maybe a lifter? or something separate from the motor underneath a cam. Here is a picture,

I don't really know what to do at this point. But I am posting this bulletin to see if it might be a blown motor. Obviously it is impossible to tell for sure with my very vague description, but I was really hoping that this picture might be able to be described to me. Thank you.

Btw your the 4th person I know with a 99 gsx who spun a rod.
I am going to keep saying this: There must be a new defect that is just emerging with these higher miles that the 99 4g63's have. Did you see what happened? I bet it was cylinder 1 or 2.

That doesn't sound like a coincidence, you are probably right. Mine only had 107,000 miles. I'll find out what happened within this week, so I will let you know.

I'd look for a stock 6 bolt in good condition...why spend all that money unless you are going to be running 9s?

Good point. But it is probably because I am scared. If I blew another motor, it would be devastating, not only to my bank account, but to myself as well. Id like a strong motor that will have a better chance handling an old or weak part malfunctioning. I know blowing motors and re building them is all part of the game, and I definitely never plan on running 9's, or 10's for that matter, but I really, really can't afford this to ever happen again in the near future. I don't think I'll ever really be able to step on it again with out that feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Exactly why you want a stock motor. If you blow it, you are not out $4000. I picked up a perfect compression complete 6 bolt which was recently rebuilt for $700. Threw a new water pump, tbelt, tensioner and threw in the car. It's got a stock headgasket and stock headbolts. Im running 26 psi on the 16g on str8 pump gas with 19 degrees of timing and 10.9 afr across the board.

My buddy is running mid to low 11s on a stock motor running 32 psi on a holset hx40 with a stock headgasket and arps' on pump gas + meth.

You don't need a built motor to make good power and not break...These motors are stout, just tune it right and it will last!

But if you got $, build a motor!

Im still shopping for a clean 6 bolt. What was he thinking? Nitrous is a no-no frys the mani, melts pistons as you mentioned. Unless its for the track and you have a trailer. Not for a DD. You pay extra for a JDM whens its the same as a USDM. Only difference is the JDM says "Cyclone" on the intake mani.

Nah bro, the cyclone manifold IS different, not just the lettering that says cyclone. I know a lot of people that run them actuated off a T25 actuator. Its a dual runner manifold.

Any idea why? I know the 1999 7 bolt has something different about it that gives it less of a chance for crank walk, but is that why it blew?

I don't know. I am asking my friend right now if his '97 engine had that sheet of metal in the oil pan that separates pistons 1 & 2 from the oil pan. If his doesn't, then there is our problem.

As it just so happens, I have a 6-bolt freshly pulled from my 1g sitting in the garage. PM me and we can discuss.

Updated pictures with the motor OUT of the car. Enjoy!

/\ Piston number 4

I outlined the hole which I posted pictures of earlier, only this time on the other side.

Also, my transfer case has a hole about 1 1/2 inches in diameter in it. And my starter is tattered as well.

Wow. How much is left of that rod? Looks like you've got a nice new paperweight for your workbench that sorta looks like half of a piston.

Any progress on the new powerplant?

Yeah, the piston came out in two pieces, LOL. I actually have a lot of new paperweights. So far my new motor is being machined, it's a 2.4l 6 bolt with the wiseco/eagle combo. Other than my local classifieds, does any one know where I can find a cheap 97-99 manual transfer case? DSMgraveyard has them for 5-600, but I'm not trying to drop that much on one.

Looks like that rod let go on a pretty good pull.... Ouch. sorry to see that. Glad you are sticking with the cat though. You can learn alot by building a motor on your own and save some cash. You're choice either way.

do you think the timing caused it?

Could have been a number of things but my guess is it starved for oil, supn a bearing, tossed a rod cap!!! That really suck but on the other hand you can build what you have always wanted now. . . . . .
