Hey guys I just blew a rod in my '97 GS 420a and possibly have a crack in my block.

I wanted to see what were the best engines to swap in other than another 420a. I was looking into doing a 4g swap but I’ve seen people say it’s not worth it.

The engine isn’t holding oil so I’m assuming there might be a crack in the block because the oil pan looks good, but I won’t know till I take it out and look but if there isn’t a crack in the block and just a messed up head. What head should I use if I plan on boosting?

A 4g swap was definitely worth it to me but it's not an easy swap by any means of the imagination.

You may just be better off getting a junkyard 420a to build up. The 2.4 swap to me wouldn't be bad but it's involved. There's a lot more members on here that have way more experience than me but every person has their own opinion on what they think a person should do.

It's all in how much money you want to spend or if your doing all the work how much time you want to put into it. I just really don't want to see another one of these cars parted out over an unfinished project.

Ok thanks man, which 4g did you go with bc I’m trying to decide but am not sure which to go for

If I were you I'd just swap another 420a in.

I should have said it was worth it to me with the situation I was in. I had a very rusty GST and my RS was in a crash up front so I decided to tackle the job. I don't want to sound like it just being a weekend job because it took me months. The whole front clip has to be cut off and welded along with all the wiring being swapped. You'd literally need a donor car.

I should have been more specific that was my bad but it's not easy at all. Your better off just swapping another 420a in and enjoy the car for what it is.

Would it still be that hard if I got a 4g with the same side timing chain?

Unfortunately, the 4g63 swap is INVOLVED and TIME/MONEY CONSUMING so you need to take a bit of time to look at the swap. I'm with Jesse, rebuild or find a donor motor and replace it after you refresh it.

Well if you do the newer evo swap one it is not cheap at all. But others will have to chime in on that one. I'm not real familiar with the other swaps but it can be done. You'll have to look more into them.

Solid advice!
