ok so i have a friend that has a 91 awd and he replaced a head gasket and he said well im this far im gunna build some of it. so he took it out and had it machined and cleaned up along with the head also. all aftermartket including he installed the balance shaft eliminator kit. put back together and started up great and let it run for about of 30 min. next day took it out for a drive got ten miles away and it died on him, pulled it back to the house and popped the hood and the timing belt was covered in oil, and some of the rocker arms were floppin in the head out of place. his thoughts are that with the oil on the belt it skipped time and bent the valve stems. ok witht that he has a new head he is throwing in on the buy also, but where is the leak coming from where the oil got out. it is somewhere on the side where the belt is. he is willing to sell it to me for 1500 including the new head. im gunna jumnp on it but what could the problem be???? please need advise :talon:

most likely a cam seal or one of the other seals in the front case, crankshaft oil pump and cams are the only 4 i believe

I find it hard to believe that it the cam seals. It would need to leak a lot to get the belt to slip those belt are pretty tight. It is possible but unlikely. That why i said the balance shaft you need to block the hole for the one shaft and if he plugged in with the metal plug rather then the seal then it may be leaking there since it does not seal as well.

I think we should ask ourselves why the cam followers (rocker arms) are "floppin' around"!!!
There is only one cause for that unfortunately... Yeah, sorry but the timing belt was not installed correctly and the valves hit the piston crown, now they are bent and jammed open. How many of us have tore down interference engines due to a busted timing belt and saw the blighters "floppin around"? I have.....

Well from a leak somewhere on the front cover. As the chap said, if you do not do the BS elimination right you can get leaks. Usually from the pinkish purple circle on the left.

BS elimination also causes higher oil pressure, which can cause leaks. It's possible that this higher pressure caused oil to push past some gaskets and cause leaks in the timing area, though if that did happen I still think the bent valves are more likely from a screwed up timing job/improper tension on the belt which caused it to slip and bend some valves. Anyway, while you have the engine there and are messing with the timing gear it can't hurt to port the oil relief valve, a simple search on these forums will tell you what you need to know about doing it.

To add. . . I have had many a blown head gasket that leaked oil out the front where the timing belt is. Or not had them seal at the front of the engine and caused an oil leak on the timing belt and BS belt. There are several oil passages there.

i have never done timing beofre on this type of car, but im haveing someone there with me that knows about it. but i am worried about where this oil is coming from and how it got onto the belt. is it ok to try to do this in the car or would that be a mistake.??

The timing belt is easy so long as you can put the right torque on the eccentric pulley. Also once you get the front cover off you will know where the oil is coming from, there won't be a question.

ok so i bought the car got it home and began to look it all over on what the problem is. i got it all to tdc and checked the timing and the bottom timing was on but the cam shaft gears were way off by lik 5 teeth. so thats why its messed up there. i took the belts all of and the front case to swap the head out and check out the leak. found that the front cover the gasket was half missing and there was no nut on the oil pump sproket. and the sproket on the inside was brroken . so thats where i am now and beginning to swap the heads tonight. i will post pix soon
