1G Best way to weld clutch pedal asembly

Well after bleeding and re-bleeding my clutch,I found out that the clutch pedal assembly is worn out and will not allow me to push the master cylinder in enough to engage the clutch....The Lever is worn out and I plan on welding it...What is the best way to weld it?Just a bead around the nut connecting it to the lever?What about the bushing that is in the lever, is there a good way to weld the assembly without melting the bushing?Thanks

Just get a new assembly.

A new assembly won't solve the problem of it stripping out when you have a stiff pressure plate. Get that thing out of the car(unless your super skilled to get it done in the car) and just wrap a wet rag around where the bushing is to control heat a bit.
Just spot tack it all the way around, try not to put too much heat into it but enough for penetration.

The clutch and brake pedals should be level with eachother, so thats a good reference point on where it should go.

It will fix it for a little while, but 1g pedal assembly's wear out really fast with a stiffer than stock pressure plate.

First I would check the bushing. That's usually the part that wears out. Lot easier to pop in new bushings that pull the entire assembly out.

I would replace those crappy plastic bushings with the brass ones before you weld it up. The brass ones will not wear out. You may want to consider getting with (I believe) sheptrans and get the whole assy rebuilt.


My first 90 gsx the lever wore out in 4000 miles after putting in a stage 1 act clutch the car only had 82000 miles on it. The bushings were fine but you can not weld on the shaft with out having some concern of melting the plastic bushing. Plus once you weld it up if the bushings fail you have to by a new shaft and lever to replace them.

EDIT: On a side note I have also seen them fail after being welded. The shaft is too small and some times shear off on the opposite side of the lever after being welded. Not sure how shep does his not sure if he weld both sides or not.

Thanks for all the responses...I ended up welding it and just pouring cold water onto it right after the welds..Seemed to work all right and the bushings seem to have held up.I put the assembly back in (it surprisingly went in a lot easier than it came out) and tried to bleed the clutch,but the line on the master cylinder was leaking...Turns out, when putting the line back on the master, it got cross threaded.The line wont tighten now, so it won't seal. A new master cylinder is now on order...

Can anyone describe or post a pic of where the nut and bushings are? I am having the same problem and am not seeing these which means I am looking in the wrong places.

I just got pedal assembly for my 91 back from shep, he did an awesome job and fast turnaround. He put in brass bushings and welded it up for me, no more crappy 1g pedal problems for me!

Can you point me in the direction of Shep? How much did it cost?
