I have some prothane mounts because I need to replace the factory rubber inside of the drivers side mount. whats the best way to remove the rubber? can you remove the rubber and install the insert without taking the entire mount off the engine?

I researched but I couldn't find what I needed

You have to take the mount out of the car. You can either use a torch to burn out the stock rubber but it makes a mess and catches on fire. Do it outside somewhere safe. or use a big drill bit and drill holes all around the interface and pop it out and clean out the residual rubber with a wire wheel.

You might even be able to burn them out like the subframe bushings:

Another thing you can do is drill a large hole thru the rubber right beside the steel sleeve then use a carbide bur to cut the sleeve and it will just pop right out. Just be very careful not to chew into the aluminum housing. All you want to do is grind a slot in the steel.
After doing a few sets of these over the years, I found that removing the rubber completely will make it much easier (and quicker) to get the steel ring out.

when I did all the mounts in my 1g, this was the easiest way with the tools available:

-drill a few holes in the rubber to create some space.
-grab the reciprocating saw and run it around inside to get as much of the rubber out as possible.
-use the recip to carefully cut through the inside metal sleeve.
-grab a big hammer and punch, and start peeling the corner of the sleeve where it is cut out and down from the wall of the mount. Once you get a corner or both corners peeled to a certain extent, the whole thing would pop loose and could be driven out.

I just took a sawzall to the rubber and through the ring just barely. I then drove a screwdriver near the cut section to part it from the mount itself and allow you to remove it all.
