I have heard the 1g is the easiest 10 second car to build but I've also heard 2g are as well. So could anyone tell me which 1 actually is?

Both can be really fast with the proper maintenance and upgrade path, but from my experience the 1G's seem to be the quickest. Maybe due to the experience of the owners and people have had more time to experimentand maybe it's cheaper to get fast. Just from what I've seen the 1 G's are faster. With enough money and the know how sure the 2 g could be just as fast. Look at the drag times the article above listed. :hellyeah:

Can't really argue with those numbers. I'm currently looking for a 1G FWD TSI to add to my garage, since AWD is not as needed in Florida:) My 2g has been a pain and still working out the bug's from it's previous owner. :hellyeah:

1g is lighter with more room in the front for big turbo installs. . . late 1991-early 1992 tranny has the strongest 3rd/4th assembly, 6bolts have been pushing over 100whp more than 7bolts typically for a maximum output rating, 4bolt rears come in 1g cars just like 2g, the stronger transfer case started in 1992, 6bolts have straight cut gears that tolerate BSE kits better, 6bolts have headbolts that can see 10s without a sweat. . . All 1g, with that lighter weight.

So the question is which 1g. . . There's a 1g out there with all the best of both worlds. . . Except for the reflashable, high speed ecus of the late 2g . . . And that is: the late 1991-early 1992 car. . . You can run 10s with its stock block (6bolt). It has the strongest dsm tranny of them all. It has the revision to the transfer case that makes it stronger for all the years subsequent. It has the weight of a 1g and the better assembly of the rear to the chassis of a 1g. 2g guys complain about ripping up rear diffs because of how it is assembled to the chassis. It also has the best 3rd/4th gearset of all dsm trannies. 3rd and/or 4th go out first in the transmission after dealling with the center diff.

The late 1991-early 1992 car has less weight than a 2g with the same 4bolt rear, better rear fixture to the chassis, better gearsets that commonly break, more room in the engine bay on the turbo side especially. Only negatives: Slower ecu (like that has mattered in real life ), no girdle for the motor (who cares, you don't need to rev to kingdomcome or run a stroker kit to easily dip in the 10s), double wishbone suspension (this isn't a circuit course goal we're talking about here).

I live in the desert and need awd. Any real power and fwd skates all over the place, even bone dry, hot asphalt.

mine was built november 1991 but is a 1gb so im pretty sure its got the set up dsm-onster is talking about with the tranny, i know its a 6 bolt as well. my brother has a 95 talon esi so we were debating on what one was a better set up stock for stock pretty much. and by all of the input it looks like my 1gb is in the lead so far thanks for the imput guys!!

n/t trannies are FAR different than turbo trannies. As well, fwd turbo trannies are FAR different than awd trannies. . . So you have nothing in the lead :( . . . You have a weak n/t tranny, with the small fwd axles they jumped in diamter in 1993.
