I'm getting a squeak out of my 98 gsx every time I start my car, and gets worse when i turn the heat on. So I changed my altinator and found out that most of the squeaking went away. So I guess it was the bearing in the altinator pulley. But the squeak is still there when I start the car and also when I turn the heat on. What could still be causing the the squeaking? Also noticed it tends to do it when the altinator needs to run off more power. So I was thinking it has to do with one of the pulleys running off the altinator belt. Any ideas?

Weird, my 98 gsx does the same thing. It went away after i changed the belt that was kind of loose.
Does it go away after its warmed up a bit?

Yes I replaced the belt and yes it goes away when it's warmed up. It do it just when it's cold.

And if that does not work could it be a different pulley on that belt. Like the water pump pulley or the crank shaft pulley.

Just to let you know. That is usually a sign that your harmonic balancer is on its way out. Trust me, i learned the hard way twice. Check that and if the rubber doesnt look good then replace it. Parks auto parts (around here thats what its called) sells them new for 65 bucks.

^ either that or there was never proper tension applied to the belt in the first place. On a " back to the basics note" a worn idler puller can cause this as well.

While that could be true and wouldnt hurt to check anyways, his problem still could just be improper tension. When my balancer was starting to go out it did make a squeak sound but it was considerably different (more like a continuous chirp) than the squeal that I was used to from the belt.

OP maybe try and take the belt off, and take some 1000 grit sand paper and scuff up all three pulleys. With the belt slipping they've more than likely "glazed" over and slip more easily.

I seem to be experiencing something similar. i just did a complete timing job and put on a new alternator with new belt and no a/c is hooked up,replaced harmonic balance too. it was not doing it at first. i start the car yesterday and bam random squeal.

Mine would only squeal for a second when i first fired it up in both occassions before the harmonic balancer went out. It will not hurt to check

Mine did that too....It was the alternator belt that wasnt tensioned properly. I would have to turn off my heater in the mornings so it wouldnt squeel when I started. I hope it's just that... Im thinkin it is.

If I replace the balancer does it have to be re-balanced. Or is it just a bolt on job.
