Hi folks. Have a question regarding a squeak from the rear of my car. Its a 1999 GS non turbo. Ever since Ive had it ( 2 months ) everytime I start it, there is a squeak coming from the passenger side rear. It is a slow squeak, not like a squeaking belt. I tried to take a video of the sound but you cant hear it over the exhaust. It is loudest if I am crouched down just by the rear tire. It will squeak, maybe a good 2 seconds counting will go by......squeak.......................squeak. It will do this for a few minutes and then stop. What is back there that could possibly squeak? This noise happens everytime the car is started and at idle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It could possibly be a worn out rubber hanger on the rear of the car if that is the area you are referring to. I had an exhaust that surprised me with all the different noises it would make in different driving conditions, and I went nuts trying to find what it was for the longest time. I honestly though suspension.

I'd say strut tower housing. My mother has a Neon with the most annoying squeak I've ever heard and it's from a loose strut tower housing. Or maybe one of the seals in the hatch or those little rubber cushions. I had a bad strut on my last Talon and it made a horrible loud clunking rattle. And every time I'd go over a bump, the car would about bounce right off the road. And every time I took a sharp turn, the thing would about flip over on me.

Thanks for the responses guys but I hear this noise when the car is sitting still! Start it up, jump out, run around to the passenger side and hear it squeak.

Probably a mouse.

If the car is sitting still then nothing is moving, I think it is your exhaust rubbing. Shut the car off and shake your exhaust. But the best thing to do is get your car on a lift or jack stands high enough you can get under there. Start the car and MAKE SURE YOUR CAR IS SAFE to go under LOL. Then look and see if you can see where it is coming from. I am banking on your exhaust vibrating and rubbing something though.

It's on the passenger side though. If it was exhaust, it would be on the left.

Thanks guys, all of your ideas, I have considered. Im leaning towards the fuel pump as the squeak last about a minute and then slowly gets quieter and quieter until it stops.

It is the right rear shock mount bushing. Where the rear shock mounts to the axle housing. That bushing will get dry and start to squeak and radiates some weird sounds even when the car is sitting still.

Again Im leaning towards a fuel pump but I just read that a clogged fuel filter will cause the pump to make some strange sounds including a squeak. Does anyone have step by step instructions on how to change a fuel filter on a 1999 GS non turbo? I have the filter and came with 4 copper rings. My fuel filter is in front of the passenger rear wheel. I dont have a lift so I cant get a good look at the in's and out's of the fuel lines using my ramps. All of the videos I have seen show the fuel filter nder the hood on the firewall. Any photos or links would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I know the Haynes manual has a fuel system section. I'd check there. I'd look it up, but I don't have it on hand right now and I don't know if I can post it since it's copyrighted.
