420A A/C squeak

tensioner pulleys squeak from worn bearings usually which would be more rather than on and off. bad harmonic balancer would also be more of a constant noise than on off. compressor clutch is very uncommon to go bad like that. some see over 300k and still work just fine.

start the car let ac run on max when it starts to squeal wet the belt with something(water, brake fluid, something,) if squealing goes away its the belt. tighten the belt till you can start it and it stops squealing.

If the AC was used almost continually, I've seen clutches wear completely under 100K miles. We don't know what his AC usage habits are, or if the car's used, the previous owners - their habits were.

When that movable clutch disc slam against the solid one during motor operations, that movable disc really takes the beating when it slammed and hit hard against the other.

But true: AC belts have to be pretty tight since they work the hardest when used..and that puts the work on the HB pulley and belt tensioner roller (seen those bearings go first in that tensioner roller) after awhile.

If you don't tighten or use the locking nut on the tensioner the pulley will whobble and scrape the timing belt cover. It will only do it on occasion.

A lot of people try to skip over it because they feel as though the pulley cant go up and down since its held in place so its not going to lose tension or fall off so its fine. But the side to side movement causes grooves to be cut into the timing belt cover which causes that ungodly howl.

Forgot to mention that if you turn on the AC its more frequent and usually does it on start up.
