Hey guys I am hopeing someone can help me with this problem I am having. Installed a 96 talon engine to replace my bad engine and the power steering/ac belt will not stay on. When I start the car it stays on the crank pulley and power steering pump but slides one rib off the outside of the ac compressor pulley so that the inner 4 ribs are the only ones touching it. I tried using just a 4 rib belt and it stayed on for about a month but would slip when having ac on and turning the steering wheel too far. Today it finally came off driving down the highway. I do not know what the problem is how could the AC comp be out of alignment if that is the issue? I do not see any way to adjust it, could the tensioner caust this?

I've never done a belt on a 420a engine but I know that you'll have belt alignment issues if you accidently flip the alternator pulley connected to the waterpump on the 4g motor. See if you can't flip one of your pulley's...

Its been raining here so haven't been able to get out and work on the car but I will try the pulley thing hopefully tomorrow and see what happens.

Mine has came off so many times it is ridiculous!
The belt on mine shredded about a 1/4 of an inch and has been staying on for a while now though.
But I keep a spare belt in the garage, because I got used to it coming off.
My friends 420A Talon is the same way.(his is a reconstruct title , so it has been wrecked too)
I always thought mine was from a wreck by the previous owner and jolted something a little out of alignment.
Has your car ever been wrecked or better yet the car your new engine came out of?

i had the same problem, fixed it by removing the PS and AC... although I'm guessing this isn't your first choice for a solution.

i wouldn't recommend it if you are in heavy traffic a lot (need the ac) for have another car with PS. I personally think not having PS is addicting, get a better feel of the car. Even my g/f feels this way, her PS just went out, after driving like this for 4 months she drove her sisters car and hated it because of the PS.

umm not sure, i'm in the lifelong project of slowly removing all of them i find, and trust me, they are everywhere!!!!

The car the new engine came out of was rolled and totaled. I have tried everything and it will not align. It seems to be the AC compressor. When I put a belt around just the Crank pulley and PS it works fine. The tensioner may be a little off too. When I have it all hooked up it will only work with a 4 rib belt and if I get on the gas or shift it too hard off goes the belt.

My car does the exact same thing. I have spent so much money on those damn belts its ridiculous. Ive taken it places to fix it, ive replaced all the pulleys. The car hasnt even been crashed. I drove with a shredded up belt for probably 2 years. No problems. Decided to try to fix it again and put a new belt on and it jumped off again. Eventually I just gave up and drove with my windows down and muscle-manned it through parking lots. Now that i'm building the car up I just took everything out. Just make sure you look around on here for what people did with their power steering lines. Good luck either way! If you need a belt, i have a brand new one i could send you.

I feel like the only one here who hasn't had any problems with their belts. Good rule of thumb: When you install a new belt acc belt, you should be able to grab it and twist it about 90* each direction. If you go more or can't go enough it's too loose/tight. There should be tension but not alot.

You might just be the only one not crazy enough to just say screw it and remove everything haha!

i had that problem with my rs. had to buy alot of belts. it would only pop off or tear off when i would mash the gas pedal. . . i had finally fixed it. then i sold it . . LOL.. . what i did was try to make it as straight as possible with the other pulley. and if not that try to see what side it comes off from and then point the pulley in the other direction so it can try to counter the effect of it coming off. it still might. but hey it wont hurt to try

Have you seen my Mods list? They've been 86'd for the last 2 years. :D I owned a 95 talon es before this and never had a problem with that one either. From what I've seen on alot of the local 420A's is the tensioner is bent or loose. I understand this is a common problem with the local guys...make sure to visually inspect your belts often. If you see any wobble on a pulley, that's your culprit.

my tensioner does look like it rides on the edge of the belt, the belt might even hang off a tiny bit can it just be pounded back straight? or does it need replaced?

I had the same problem, sometimes it would pop off if I gunned it and hit the gears hard. I went through two belts. I found out that during a stressful new belt installation if the tensioner is set too tight then when it runs its so tight the belt pulls on the tensioner making it stress to a slight angle, thats why it eventually rides up on the AC pulley then off, if it hasnt torn yet. So I have it kinda loose but not too loose. No problems yet after a few weeks. It's not riding the edge of the pulley. Hope thats helps ayone.
