hey guys. i checked the forum pretty good and never found an answer. i even checked vfaq. i removed all the bolts and got the bellhousing about an inch off but it stops. it looks to be stuck on the shifter thing. am i missing something why wont it come off?

It's been a while since I did mine, but as long as it doesn't look like it's getting hung up on anything, just give it a good tug. I think when I did mine we used a couple pry bars (gently!) to separate the two easily.

You have the two shifter cables popped off the the shifting mechanism right?

oh i used a crowbar pretty good on it haha it seems like something is still together? but if your positive that all that holds it on are the bolts then ill tug even more.

True the pry bars work on strong areas, DO NOT use them on small lips. Also, tap the case with a soft hammer, while prying. Hope this helps.

^^ Ok so there is some conflicting info here. Can we get a wiseman to comment? My tranny is out of the car right now and i was going to remove the bellhousing but it's also stuck on something inside the tranny.

Does anyone have a good write up with photos on how to do this?

Thanks,

Tom

Have you remove the transfer case ? Don't know if it's the right name but you'll not be able to separate the tranny from the motor with the transfer still bolted on the tranny ... Got it ?

its not attached to the motor. when i look it looks like it is stuck where the shifter lever is inside.

I have been trying to do the same thing with my trans. I have 2 trans. The one that was in the car grinds 3rd to 4th and the other one I have is rebuilt(but the "bell housing" is cracked on it.) I havent been able to separate the 2 peices and i have come to the conclusion that you have to dissasemble the whole trans.

A dsm tranny needs to be disassibled from the 5th gear/ reverse side. meaning the small end. You cant just remove the bell housing. Theres alot more to it. If youre using a pry bar or crow bar there is a good chance you could have bent a shift fork or shift rod. So good luck with that.

Ahhh I misread the initial post. I thought you were trying to separate the bellhousing (with tranny attached) from the block. Sorry about that.

As mentioned above, the bellhousing wont come off without disassembling the tranny.
