I just replaced my RS49T CHRA with a Garrett BB CHRA and when it spools up it make a faint high pitch noise, kind of like a police siren. I can actually step on and off the gas to make it the noise rise and fall like an actuall siren.

Is this normal???

Yes I hooked up the water lines and there is no leaks from the water lines or oil lines.

That does lead to another question. Does it mater witch water line goes to the CHRA?

I have the lower line from under the water pipe going to the motor side of the CHRA and the radiator side water line goes to the fitting near the thermosat housing.

I believe it does not matter which way you set up the coolant lines. However mine are the reverse way yours are. As for the high pitch whine a few folks were experiencing something along those lines and got the water line/pipe kit that pte sells and it stopped for them. Extremepsi should have them. But in either case i don't have any problems with the stock lines.

So then this is a bad thing?

I've tried calling some different shops and some say that the BB turbos whistle, wich I guess you could call this noise a dull whistle, and some shops say no.

Anyone else with a BB turbo and any thoughts?

It MIGHT be a boost leak. See how your shaft play is and feel for any rubbing of the turbo when you spin the compressor by hand.

Also check for an exhaust leak around the O2 housing area. Even a small leak can cause the whistle without hearing much of the actual leak.

I blew my downpipe to O2 gasket out a few weeks back, and it whistled like you wouldn't believe. I've also started my car running open O2 housing, and it made the same siren sound.

it sounds like an exhaust leak, but hey...dont tell me u dont love that sound? its very imtimidating haha

Exactly what I was going to mention. At idle, with stock water lines, it seems the BB CHRA's do a slight whine. This topic has been covered many times before and is cured when using the better PTE water lines. I myself have the high pitch whine, but don't really care.

Off topic:

madman, was there a noticeable performance increase going from the rs49t to the BB CHRA? How does spool compare? Or did you do this because the rs49t died on you?

the rs49t and the BB garrett CHRA are both 50 trims. There is no difference in them except for quality (maps are the same) and spoolup is about 300 rpms faster when tuned correctly. The major thing I noticed when switching from a standard 50 trim and a BB 50 trim is how the boost comes up when shifting.

I'm using the stock lines. It doesn't whistle at idle, only when it starts to spool up.

Ya, I did it because the rs49t died.

I was in the middle of breaking in my new clutch so I haven't been able to hammer on the turbo but just driving around town I can notice a big difference in the spool up.

Just trying to make a lane change, I'm not having to wait for the power under light acceleration like I did with the rs49t.
