Battery Relocation Materials

ok i just wanted to make sure about what i need for my battery relocation to the trunk before i order. my battery is dying and thought it was a perfect time to do it.. ok.. so here goes.

so is this all i need beside the battery?? i just really want to make it easier for others to know exactly what they need. and also i want to make sure that this is what i need. . wont use kill switch . .

I like what you put together but I think that distribution block is a bit over kill and will clutter the engine bay if that's where it's going to be located. Try finding something smaller/compact. No need to get all fancy with it, unless that's what you're going for. Just my .02

I'm pretty sure it's not that complex relocating the battery. All you need is something like the STM Battery Relocation Kit.

I assume you don't plan on racing at a track then? If you have a battery in the back and their tech inspection actually cares, you'll probably need a kill switch.

I just saw my friend get a complete relocation kit for less than $20, at a pull a part.. Almost all bmw's have the battery in the trunk. The good thing is everything is tested to oem standards.

when you say racing at the track im assuming you don't mean the drag strip?

i have my battery in the trunk and was thinking about getting a switch anyway.

i was looking at "10305 - JEGS 125A Master Disconnect Switch" and was wondering if anybody had any experience with it. i daily the car and if i remove the lever my one worry is corrosion (im not to familiar with plated metals). Also i think the amp rating is ok, but im not sure because im going by rough estimates..

any input?

I'm talking about any track, but I would think the drag strip would be worse than an autox/road race course.

The wire lengths we used are in that post.

You also have to make sure that distribution block will work for you. That will all depend on how many wires you plan to run and to where.

You'll also need wire terminals (on the ends of the wires), a battery box (not necessary if you get a sealed battery, but a good idea either way), and maybe a few small items.

What happened, you realize it takes actual work to do this?

no.. just dont want to waste money anymore.. . .. bought an optima bluetop battery and it looks goo under the engine bay.. idk if i want to move it to the trunk . dont want to hide that beauty.

The blue top battery is a marine battery and indeed Optima look nice but it ain't the best battery out there.

Make sure you make good grounds in the trunk and try to brong them up the car a little bit.

My car ran like ass for a while and I couldnt figure out why, until I added more grounds.

i agree FULLY. i have only bought 1 Optima battery in my life... But i have run 5.
i bought the Yellowtop, a year later it needed replaced. Another year later same thing. the Guys at Autozone weren't thrilled when the second one needed replaced so they switched me over to a Redtop. Same results. the Life expectancy is about a year (give or take) Last summer i got fed up of constantly swapping them out and i just got a dif battery all together.

Idk bout you, but a yellowtop in -10 degree weather sucks, I had to switch to my DieHard all winter.

Not sure why.....but now in my trunk all cozy its good.

-10 is nothing. it's the -40 that gets ya. i could be wrong but if memory serves me right the redtop has more cold cranking amps i think. i think thats why they switched me to the red. Or was it the other way around? Eitherway... it still didn't work for me. they usually died in the spring-summer-fall area. after the winter.

Back to the OP about bat relo...
ive heard of the "benefits" of doing this. But are there any real benefits for a fwd car? just wondering.
Also... besides the grounding you have listed, what are the drawbacks of doing this?

There main drawback is that if you don't do it correctly the car won't run properly. It's not that simple, you got to have knowledge in electrical circuits to setup the distribution, breakers, proper wire gauges, fuse, etc... Aside from that, it ain't really worth it unless you really need it. How much difference do you think shifting 40-50 lbs. to the rear is going to make and spending a couple of extra hundred dollars for and AGM battery?

My thoughts exactly. i can see on awd cars it would balance the car out slightly but not really. but... i would imagine it would hurt a fwd car more. the non turbo even more. We have wheelhop, and you want a little weight in the front to keep your front tires firm on the pavement especially on launch. if you have modified your suspension at all it might not happen to you (or as much). i know when i put my polyeurothane motor mounts in it killed my wheelhop massively that i dont even have a problem with it anymore.
