Basic MAFT Questions
What is it?
What does it do?
Where does it go?
Where does the xxxx color wire go?
Can I vent with a MAFT?
What MAF can I use?
Can I use a 2g MAFT with a 1g?
Can I use a 1g MAFT with a 2g?

Sorry guys !but am not really sure about this one. What does the MAFT really do and is it a good buy?thanks

After I installed mine my idle was absolute crap, I read in the maft directions that if you have boost leaks to compensate you should richen the idle knob a couple clicks. This and adjusting the biss made my idle fine. That and make sure the other knobs are correctly set. Not sure about the smoke though

what size injectors are you using, was version of the translator do you have, what do you have the maft knobs set to( knobs and the 4 dip switches, what size maf are you using?

i have the newest version 2.02 im runnning 680cc injectors with a walbro 190lph. I have the dials set as pet the manual says for that size and the rest are zeroed out. Im using a 3" gm maf out of a chevy malibu and have all the switches off except for switch 3 which says startup enrichment (my car starts alot easier with this flipped up) Now i have managed to take it out for a drive and it stopped smoking and the idle barely ever surges anymore. the only thing that kidna concerns me is that to get my fuel trims correct i had to add about 14% on my safc now i thought that with the maft the trims would be pretty close with it just set for the correct injector size? also whats the best course of action for me to get a basic tune now that its drivable should i set the high table at 14% or leave it at 0 on my safc2 and go from there.

so i dont have too connect to a rpm source if i leave it in AIRFLOW mode. also can i just set it for my size injectors and set my safc back to 0% and start tuning with it and just leave the maft alone since i know what im doing with my safc??

Adding up a little more info...

Thats right... ZERO-out your maft and tune with SAFC, some people may find this pointless or just a waste to have 2 tunning devices, but if you think about it the MAFT tunes in 5% increments in Airflow mode, and 2% increments in RPM mode while the AFC tunes in 1% increments giving you a more precise 'FINE' tunning plus the SAFC conviniently is mounted in your dash while the Translator is under your hood, but then again the MAFT allows you to run a much bigger and better MAF sensor and in "Blow-Thru" mode allows you to Vent your BOV without any side effects.

So at the end working with both could be the best option short of getting DSMlink or an EMS.

so, i just scooped up some 550cc RC ENG. injectors. now, im no retard to fuel injection so i knew what would happen when i installed them. .....and i did. the car runs on 16lbs boost on stock turbo with a hacked MAF and some other free mods. it was hitting what felt like fuel cut at 5g's. i turned boost down, problem solved. once i had injectors in the car it BARELY ran at idle, sounded like a big-cammed v8. once boost kicks in it takes off like a rocket. i totally knew that would happen and fully understand why. i just need to know whats the easiest/best way to control the ammount of air going in. the question is......

Will a MAFT automatically correct the air/fuel ratio in the engine? or do i need to buy a SAFC-II. i know the safc will solve my fuel problems but i dont wanna buy more than i need to. any help would be appreciated.

An MAFT won't do it automatically. You'll need to tune it just like you would with an SAFC.

Even then that's shaky. Kinda like when people installed 2g mafs and 550's. Having seen a car with the 2g mas 550's combo. That may be the cheep route your looking for. If it were my car I would get the AFC you can pick up the plain old S-AFC for about 150 bucks.

What? Do you know what an MAFT is? It is a piggyback just like the SAFC.

I would aslo go with the afc, the maft is more of a global tuning device, cant get to detailed. Or spring for the dsm link.:thumb:

Yes I know what a MAFT is. A maft only has 4 points of adjustment. I didn't say it wouldn't work I just don't think he would be happy with it.

DSM Link is a great device, but using it alone will not let you use a GM MAF. You would need to keep the translator for now. However, the folks at DSM Link are currently working on a couple things for the new version that should come out in a couple months, and one of those things is the ability to compensate for the GM MAF. But for now, if you want to keep the GM MAF, just get DSM Link, put all the translator values at "0" or "stock" and strictly use Link to tune.

edit-In terms of changing/modifying sensors, the only things you need to run DSM Link is a laptop and a socketed EPROM ecu. Do some searches if you don't know what EPROM or EPROM socketing is.

cool thanks for the info. i think im gonna save up for dsm link. i dont have a MAFT yet but i DO have the 3" GM MAF. i guess ill just save for the link and hope i got enough by the time the new one comes out. in the mean time im parking the car till i can tune it because 500cc injectors + 16 lbs of boost with NO fuel management = no go. so begins the project :) thx for all the input

As long as you know that you need a logger and half of the job is the logging first and then tuning accordingly. You can make your car run fine with any of those 3 tuning devices, it just depends which one will be the better choice. The maft/afc are tuning devices which need to be mated with a logging device. DSMlink is tuning/logging combined.

from best to worst

dsmlink
dsmlink+maft
afc
afc+maft

This is def wrong. How can you say that just using a safc is better than using a maft/gm maf AND safc??? On top of that no one has even talked to this guy about eprome ecu's and keydriver chips.

From Best to worse including stuff that might be out your price range

*AEM EMS
*meggasquirt/Haltek/Motek and a bunch of others in that ball park
*Dsmlink
*ECU+
*MAFT PRO +Keydriver
HKS VPC+GCC
keydriver+Safc
keydriver+maft
safc+maft
safc
Maft

That's the general jist of things I mean there are other universal things such as greddy e-manage but those are those most comon among DSM guys. All the ones with a * by it have both fuel and timing controll which is what you want.

Have you ever even used DSMlink

you saying shitty megasqurit is better??

The list I made was for the simplest of operation with ease of tuning and what he had already said in a pervious post.

Changing the airflow signal before the piggyback/ ecu sees it just makes tuning that much harder.

Listen man dsmlink is the truth but that's cause it's one of the most user friendly tuning devices. You haven't used megasquirt and neither have I but that doesn't mean that dsmlink is beter. My list is not bias and simply by ability according to standalone to hybirds to piggy backs. The reason maft+safc is better than just safc is one because you will not only have the ability to tuner bigger injectors but you will eliminate the stock mas decreasing lag and alowing for more flow.

I have used magasqurit there are about 5 cars around me with it. Includeing one of the few DSM's. I can show you some pics if you want.
