OK, my oil pump went out on me and I'm trying to figure out what road to take now.(Nothing else is damaged) I'm going to end up pulling the motor regardless just because its so much easier to work with that way. These are some options i thought up.
Option1
Just replace the oil pump and do a BSE on the 7-bolt
Option2
Find a 7bolt short block and replace the entire bottom end(and do a BSE)
Option3
6 Bolt swap w/ BSE
Option4
The cheapest of the above options with rods and pistons

Let me know or if you have a better option I'm all ears. At the moment I'm just saving up, i would love to find an inexpensive 6 bolt long block and get some 9:1 pistons and any type of reasonably priced rods and just swap my cams over and build the head(Lifters, springs, retainers, maybe valves, etc.). Thanks again, all opinions welcome(within reason)

PS. My budget is around $2000 more or less. And im not exactly in a rush either.

In all honesty, I would just replace the pump and do the BSE to get it back up. Take your time locating a good 6 bolt block and everything you need and build it up separate to drop in later down the road.

Replace the pump and call it good. Maybe so some small mods to get the HP up there but get another block to do a full build on. That way your car is still mobile and you are in no rush to do the engine build.

As for how the pump failed I'm not sure yet havent pulled that much apart yet(seems to be from normal wear though because I gradually started to have less pressure until one day It just stopped working altogether). And the eclipse is a side car so no rush to have it done. I would like to only pull it apart once and get everything engine wise done at that time.

Please make sure that you thoroughly clean out all the oil passages more so if you suspect the slightest bit of metal shavings that could have become circulated.

How are you sure that there is no damage to anything else? Have you pulled the rod, main and cam caps yet? If it truly has no oil pressure and the pump is to blame than there will be pieces of the pump thru out the entire engine.

I just got everything hot tanked and cleaned, waiting for assembly, make sure its all clean when you decide to get it together, your in no rush , so time is on your side, once you do all that and replace the proper parts you should be just fine.

How many miles?
How were you keeping track of the falling oil pressure? the stock dash gauge?
When was the last time the Time belt was replaced?
Have you checked the rear BS belt? That is waht drive the oil pump?

Have you put a mech gauge on it and checked it?
May be just the By pass spring is weak or broken.

around 120,xxx(rough guess previous owner had engine replaced with a used one and ive owned it for 5 years)
yes stock gauge(dummy light was also a big help)
between 15-20,xxx miles ago (or less, all timing components were replaced)
No

No
Maybe. I just haven't had the time to mess with it, but will soon

Also the oil was changed with Royal Purple 20w50 a bottle of Lucas Synthetic oil stabilizer and either a K&N or OEM filter every 3000miles or less.

The '98 engine will have the revised thrust bearings to help prevent crankwalk. Just rebuild what you have with new bearings and front case with a BSE. No need to mess around with a 6 bolt swap when the 7 bolt is plenty strong enough for your power goals.
