I recently bought a Jdm engine from an importer in Washington state. Its currently at a shop and the mechanic was workin on the thing and said it needed the valve seals to be replaced.
So he pops the valve cover and the valves are all not sealing. He does a leakdown test and like 65% is getting through.

1) The Long block has a 1 year warranty that is still good
2) I called the place to let them know what was happening hoping for some refund and the guy told me it was "impossible" that could not happen.
3) What should i do? Send a letter, email, pictures? Anyone experience the same thing ?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Get paid to tell you stuff like this.

I have a hard time believing a JDM crate engine has a bad head. They are only sold over here if they ran good in the original car.

How shady is this "mechanic"?

good luck.

Is the place you bought it from respectable? For my own knowledge, as I am buying an engine soon, how much was it?

Why not? I know a guy who had to end up going through 3 JDM motors before settling on one that was suitable. He would yank the head and finely inspect it each time to see it was acceptable. Bent valves most of the time.

I hear of people sending motors back quite a bit. Dont think they wouldnt import a dud.

I got a good longblock the first time. It really depends on who you buy them from, in my opinion. You go with shady businesses, or businesses that may not have many credentials or good reviews, you should expect things like this.

To follow along the lines with GSXtacy....... yeah, mechanics will tell you that the moon will replace the sun in six months at noon if it will get you to buy a part or give him some work to do that'll pull money out of your pocket.

However, barring the possibility of the Mechanic just being a money grubbing prick- have you inspected the head at all? Looked for any cracks, warping, etc. etc? How long did the motor sit at the warehouse before it was purchased? Did they give you any records regarding the condition of the motor when you purchased it? (Milage, donor vehicle condition, etc. etc.)

That's funny. Bought a 6-bolt JDM longblock from a reputable dealer in Canada. Got it on the stand to change all the timing components and discover the BS belt had snapped while the car had been running, gotten caught in the timing belt and smashed all the intake valves...not a fun situation. Ended up buying a spare head the guys that were helping me had in their garage. Ended up getting like $300 back from the company.

i had the same exact issue from a place out there, they ripped me off and didnt want to give me my money back.

Just to chyme in, I had the EXACT problem with my JDM motor. Bad vavle seals on number 3. Lots of nasty smoke when driving, lots of oil in my exhaust ports and manifold. Got the same stiff-arm treatment when I tried to seek compensation for the "PARTS", not the labor. I eventually gave up and just swapped the head. Really frustrating though.

I bought my motor from GOT-JDM.com.

I'd stay away from them. If anyone else has encountered any such bad luck, perhaps they can chyme in with the name of the less-than-reputable supplier to forbode others.:toobad:
