My Mitsubishi Eclipse GS (Automatic, 1995, 130K) will randomly go into limp mode, or at least I think it's limp mode:
-If I am driving slowly it will shift into 2nd gear with a jerk, after that, no matter what I do, it stays in 2nd, I can only go to Reverse with another violent jerk.
-If I am driving fast on the highway, it will go out of gear, as if I am in neutral, as I decelerate and get into 2nd gear territory, it switches into 2nd, and behaves like I described above.
Normally, if I turn the car off and then back on, it will come out of it. The problem is very intermittent, I haven't seen a pattern with weather or how long the car has been on.
So I've taken the car to a couple of mechanics who do free diagnostic and scan the computer. One said that he couldn't get into the tranny section. One lied about getting codes and started BSing me about changing a bunch of stuff that would amount to $500. The other two seemed truthful and said that there were no codes.
I have changed the transmission fluid/filter and the problem persists. The positive terminal of the battery is still protected by a cap... possible but not probable that there is a short somewhere else.
I have read some threads that have similar problems to me, but not exactly. My hunch is some loose connection or TCU malfunctioning. I tried to pull my codes based on http://www.plymouthlaser.com/tcucodes.htm from the thread http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=207009&highlight=tcu , but I couldn't, my 2G connection was different than the one shown.
Any ideas?
Also, where is the TCU? I tried to do some research on the forums but couldn't find any info on where to find it and how to remove it to inspect. Where can I get a new or used TCU, and what should I be paying for it?
Thanks
