Auto to Manual swap?

I'm looking to buy a turbo 2g Talon or Eclipse, but the only turbo'd DSMs I can find are automatics and the only manuals I can find are non-turbo'd.

Has anyone ever done an auto to manual swap or have had it performed on their car? How much did it cost? Is it worth it to do a swap or should I wait until I find one available?

If you don't know how to do it yourself, just buy a manual car. I could see a shop charging $1,000+ in labor.

Remember to use the search function on this website. Research first, then ask specific questions in new threads. It will be better for you, better for the other members of this site, and better for the overall organization of this site.

My thoughts on this topic is that it is not worth most people's time/money to do the swap. It kind of falls in the same realm of doing a 4g swap into a NT 2g. Also remember that you need to do work to the interior of the car when you do the swap so it just adds to the hassle of the project.

I'm agree, Just wait till a manual turbo pups up, unless you have the time and want to go through the hassle to do the swap, then go for it, But if you are trying to pay some one else to do the swap, then I would highly recommend to export a car from some other country or county, even paying for the export could be cheaper then paying some one else to do the swap.

Just search for the closest DSM and take a bus to get to it and drive it back home and you will get a better car for cheaper then buying local and paying for the swap.

you might be surprised having an auto, I sure am. Only downfall is the stock torque converter and brake boosting at 2500rpm.

I have to agree with the post about searching. I usually cant stand people saying to "search" first then ask if you cant find it... but there are literally hundreds of post and threads and FAQ's on how to do an auto to manual swap.

The parts list is 2 pages long printed in small print, the wiring harness is different in the sense that the auto's have a TCU and have that wiring in the auto harness while, obviously, the manual has less wires. pedal swap since you need the 5spd pedal setup, and just small, irritating parts that only the mitsu dealership will have unless you can find a donor car, In the end... you can pick up an manual for the same amount as you can an auto if you just search for it.... even look into different cities in NY or NJ since its not that big of a drive for you. Manuals are everywhere but you gotta actually look rather than settle for an auto...which I drive an auto GSX so I dont see an issue with an auto.... Just my .02's worth on this post.

I had a 95 TSI AWD that was auto and when I bought it I had planned on swapping it to a 5 speed but after researching for hours and and seeing what all was needed I decided to sell it and just buy a 5 speed DSM. For me it was cheaper and easier.

I'm going to disagree with everyone else.

I looked and looked and looked for a 5-speed, but they were all riced out or beaten to hell. So I bought my super clean, stock, low milage auto and 5-speed swapped it.

110% worth it, best thing I've ever done to my car.

**Suggestion, find a donor car if you do decide to swap it. Trying to find all the pieces from different cars would be a nightmare.

I just don't see how you can't find a clean 5spd for the price you would pay for an auto DSM.

All numbers are for illustration purposes only:

Clean auto DSM = $5,000

Donor car = $2,000

Hours and hours of labor = $1,000+ at a shop or whatever your own time is worth (you'd better value that time at least $8.00)


Total: $8,000 DSM which you will never get that money back when you resell

Or...

Clean Manual DSM = $5,000

Travel costs = $500

Total: $5,500 and no downtime for your car



Financially it's common sense. But above all else, do what you desire. No one else can make the decision.

I would personally wait it out and get what you want.
