Anyone running evo 3 16g with stock smic

Just curious if anyone is running an evo 3 16g with the stock smic on 4g63 motor? What are the pros/cons to this versus going with a fmic? I would like to keep the stock smic for the sleeper look.
 
Can you run the evoIII on the stock SMIC, yes you can. Can you expect the best performance out of it, no way. I first ran the HRC SMIC & while it seemed great at the time I noticed a big difference with my fmic setup. With the HRC would usually see knock in 3rd & 4th on a WOT pull set at 18 psi. With the fmic I have ran up to 22 on pump without knock. At the same boost level I gained a couple lb/min of airflow & you could defently tell the difference with the butt dyno. Actually the gain was more then I expected, I didn't think it would be that noticeable at the same boost level & that I wouldn't see much gains until I ran higher boost levels. I went from 2.25" pipeing on the SMIC to a short route 2.5" FMIC, the lag in the 2 setups wasn't noticeable. There might have been some but I would have had to comapre some logs to find out.

I wouldn't recommend a SMIC because of the flow restriction but if you must keep a SMIC I would upgrade it to a better flowing bar/plate unit such as the HRC and add meth injection to run descent boost levels on pump.
 
I've been running a 16g with a custom SSMIC (aluminum end tanks n such) for about a year now and it gets heatsoaked. When you start getting heat soak you start getting knock and it makes tuning a pain.

I'm going to be buying a "street" frontmount from JR here next week. If i were you i would skip any of the side mount upgrade stuff and go with a front mount.
 
i was running my evo III turbo with 18 psi daily with my sidemount, it ran great then i finally bought a fmic, as long you dont boost it that high it should be fine, i think i should of went with the sleeper look.
 
once you get into way bigger turbos and such, smic simply cant flow enough air efficently because of diameter and internal size. Almost like exhaust, you need to go bigger in pipeing, and as far as the sleeper look, you can get a smaller sized fmic thats still considerably bigger than a smic, and spray paint it black. Thats how my friends is, then it would be barely noticeable, especially at night.
 
A 16G will eventually heat soak the stock sidemount intercooler (unless of course you havn't installed any supporting mods for your turbo to turn up the boost) and if you REALLY want to keep the side mount intercoolie then just buy a Dejon big sidemount. It'll handle all the boost your 16G can dish out. :thumb:
