Anyone have oil filter that comes loose on 2nd gen AWD.

I was thinking If a safety wire, on the oil filter will keep it from coming loose.

Thanks,
Jim

Okay, that just brought me up to speed. My engine VIN number comes up to a 1990 GSX engine. But i do NOT have the air oil cooler separate, i see coolant lines. So i guess i have a 1991+ Oil cooler. So i guess i will just purchase a 1990 oil cooler and go from there. Thanks for the help.

so my oil filter came loose again and i did not relize until smoke started pooring everywhere while driving and looked at the oil pressure guage resting on low. needless to say now I have a blown motor. it was a fram oil filter. this really sucks

Sad to say it happens man. Fram FTL. But I feel your pain, my car has cost me plenty already and I havn't even gotten to the engine yet (which has no compression).

Damn dude that sucks. Did you put the oil filter on or did someone else. There was a guy here at my work that had his oil changed and they didn't tighten the filter all the way. Well a week later it came off and locked his motor up. He ended up getting a new motor out of the deal.

Sorry to hear that man. Good luck.
Actually, I had similar experience long time ago. My filter did come loose in the middle of a long bridge, it was raining and dark. I noticed right away, but couldn't do nothing, so I left the car in neutral, but motor working, drive all the way down/end of bridge. After that I drove to some gas station which was may be 1.5 miles away, put some oil, tighten the filter and drove home. Afterwards car was OK.

btw If your motor is shot and you deside to replace it I've got a spare 6 bolt in the garage. I might be willing to let go.. I live about 5 min from nisky

Did the engine completely lock up on you?? If not you might still have some usable parts to work with if you're on a budget. The best bet though would probably be fresh rebuild for everything, unless you caught it before the oil pump was starved for oil. If you had an oil change shop do this and they left the filter loose I would be going down there even if I had to walk and raising all kinds of hell.

dont hate the car because the filter came loose.. I have had this happen as well..

Like everyone is asking; how do you know that you blew the motor? smoke might just mean oil on the exhaust... is it knocking? Do you have a rod saying "hello!" from side of the block? you may get lucky and just have very minimal damage, if any...

and #### fram.. haha

is this a common problem with dsm's? or just bad luck.
i noticed the oil filter is low down on the engine on talons. mine was pretty dirty on the metal rim, i gave it a good clean with a rag to make sure the filter seated firmly.

sucks to hear that though:(

I dont understand how these things back out.... everytime I change my oil i have to take a plumbers wrench to get the damn thing off...OMG

i had the same thing happen to me then i noticed that the part that the filter threads onto had started to unthread wich was causing the filter to come loose. you might want to check that if it is not to late for your motor.

sorry about your loss:(

OP probably not the filter. Since this is a recurring problem the shaft is probably loose .http://www.vfaq.com/mods/oilcool.html Be sure when you get everything back together to make sure it's tight but overtorqued, you can destroy the cooler.

Also I've been using a 3kgt VR-4 Purolator Pure One filter. As good as Mobile/K&N (do the research) half the cost and available at my local grocer/deparment store. It is smaller than the Talon filter but if it's good enough for an extra turbo and 2 extra cylinders, it's good enough for me.

Couple weeks ago i bought a mobil one filter. I started the car and the oil poured out the filter housing the gasket like poped out. I only lost 2 qts of oil, but i shut the car off right away... these cars.....

I have a 90 with no sandwich plate thing, and had 2 Mobile 1 filters come loose. My brother also had a Mobile 1 filter back off.

Put a saftey wire on the filter.
Cost about $3, and will save you lots of money and headache.

i use mobile one filters on my 91, the last one, i took off really easy so im worried, but sometiems they'll just get loose and oil will pour out without the filter actually coming off
