Anyone have oil filter that comes loose on 2nd gen AWD.

I was thinking If a safety wire, on the oil filter will keep it from coming loose.

Thanks,
Jim

Try tightening it with a filter wrench. You can pick one up from you local parts place for about 6 or 7 bucks. :thumb:

the oil filter wrench should only be used to remove the filter. chances are the nut that hold the shaft that the filter threads onto is loose. make sure you don't overtighten it or you'll have yourself a nice oil and coolant mixture from crushing the vanes.

Do that.
It happined to me . you need to take the filter off then i think its a 21mm nut. right inside the housing its part of the shaft you thred your filter onto thats whats loose.

You know...I've often pondered about that. but that comment is not exactly true. In the manual there's a torque value for the oil filter (yes there is :shhh: ). I'm not saying that you're wrong RP, because for years, I didn't torque it down and I only used the wrench exactly the way you stated. I just did the "tighten by hand and then a quarter turn of the wrench" to finish it. I do torque it down now using a filter socket. It really doesn't tighten it down that much more, but it does stay on  .

It also doesn't sound like the shaft bolts, not if...when he hand tightens the filter it's fine again until he drives it around (vibrating the filter loose again).

On a side note, but still on topic...I've had to go back and tighten down the oil filter everytime my wife would get her oil changed by places like that. They don't always do it wrong, but come on. Look at the KIDS that are changing your oil. .BTW, hand tightening won't seal the filter on that well...unless you're 6ft+ at 230lbs+. Hand tighten it and then use a wrench for that, what...1/4-1/2 turn?

The "spec" for most oil filters is along the lines of, "Turn until gasket touches seating surface, then turn an additional ¼-turn." Some filters even have markings on them to indicate the ¼-turn. The torque values from the 1995 Eagle Talon Service Manual are different for each of the Mitsubishi filters:
For MD135737: One full turn or 10 ft.lbs.
For MD136466: 3/4 turn or 12 ft.lbs.
For M05281090: 3/4 turn or 15 ft.lbs.
(I think that "M05281090" might supposed to be "MD5281090")

I had this exact same problem with my 2g. It ended up being that the seal behind the oil filter housing tore and the stud that holds the filter on was comming lose. What you need to do it take off your filter, get a 21m and losen the stud and take it out. There should be a little orange seal behind there. Inspect it to see if it is torn or not. (PM me if it is I have one left over from when mine broke I will send you free of charge :D ) Don't over tighten your filter thought. 2g fitler housings bend really easy and then it is impossible to get them to seal and not leak oil. Then put the seal in, align it and put the stud back in and torque it down. PM me if you need the seal though I'm sure I still have one.

BTW that is the right oil filter number. Comes out to a 1356 NAPA number and that's right for your car.

hey wassup guys....i just got my car like a week ago and i have test driving it ever since. I noticed that there was a puddle of oil under my car in the parking lot. I checked the oil and it was fine..it wasnt empty. THen i looked underneath and didnt notice anything. Then i felt the filter and it moved. I can literrally move it with 2 fingers. I tighten it up and drive it and then my CEL came on with the code P1400. Anyways, so after that i drove around to work and friends houses. Came home and check the oil again. The oil level was fine and i checked the filter and it was loose again. I went to Jiffy Lube to see if they can fix it. They told me nothing was wrong and the filter was the right size filter. So i drove it home after it was tighten again. The same night, it came loose again...so what could be the problem?

the CEL code said Auxillary Emission Control which have something to do with cat.converter or manifold sensors or something.....but is it possible since im losing oil and my filter is loose, the oil pressure dropped and gave me the CEL?

My oil filter keeps coming loose.....its threads on good and tight, but it comes loose 20-30 miles later. The neck that actually sits inside the oil filter is spinning. I dont think its suppose to. I do believe that piece threads in, so i was thinking that i would just tighten it, but is it more complicated than that?

That's normally the situation. Just tighten down the center piece. You might want to put some loctite on it. Not really needed. Remember that you should only put your filter on hand tight.

it just caught me off gaurd....if never heard of it coming loose.....i only put my filter on hand tight because i know that they seal themselves as your drive....i will tighten that center piece and try again....I'll let you know...thanks !

Dang, you too! Yeah, I had that happen to me a couple weeks ago. I had one of those fram tg filters and had som RP 10W30 in there for only 3 months and the pos came off! I had noticed it after I parked and saw some smoke and put it back hand tight. The next day I added oil and It came off again! Well, I ended up getting a new filter (regular fram this time) and put it on and filled it up with oil. I started it up and everything was cool. No probs since then.

Now for some explaination, why would a filter just come off? Was the threads stripped? Nope. Both of the threads on the filter and pump housing were good to go.

I asked one of my co-workers that is engineer explained to me that it was most likely warped due to heat (from the DP) that over time warped the filter and caused it to break the seal and come off.

The only solution I can think of in this case alone is to get a good filter and possibly put some kind of heat deflection wrap on it. If anyone has any input or questions on this I would greatly appreciate it. Happy holidays and god bless!

mine came loose a couple days ago... now it leak a little bit of oil... dunno what the deal is, but i do know im gonna get a new one in about 30 minutes

The idiot who owned my car before me put the filter on so tight the post came unscrewed when I took it off. No big deal though. You just have to tighten it on carefully.

I have had this problem before. It seemed to happen after I installed my larger diameter downpipe. What I found works the best is to buy a relocation kit. That has fixed my problem 100%. I tried everything else....locktight...you name it. That's my advice....or switch to an air cooler. I hear that works wonders too.

Something else that helps prevent this as well is, take the hollow threaded shaft out (make sure to get yourself a new seal from mitsu while your in there) then clean the shaft well, apply a LIGHT ammount of blue loctite. Be sure NOT to overtorque during reassembly and voila no more issues. I have done this fix many times.

Thats funny... I had a problem before. I posted it in the forums but here it is again

Installed a new turbo, 3 inch downpipe, Fidanza flywheel, act clutch, greddy EBC and when I took the car out of the shop... my BG synchro Shift dropped in my driveway (note.. the guy replaced my expensive BG shift for NAPA synthetic shit  ) but also my oil filter came loose and my oil dropped. Only thing is, when I got a new filter... it still loosened up Our Oil housings have a 2 piece design with a gasket in the middle... mine blew. Well it wasn't the first... then the oil filter came loose 2 more times and the gasket blew as well both times....

Fixes:

Got a Mitsubishi filter
Replaced my bad PCV valve

I had the same problem however it happened after i had a shop install an underdrive pulley. It happened to me three times before I had the stock one put back on. So what I was thinking it might of been with my car was the excessive vibration on the engine. But that happened 30,000 miles ago. So yeah....

mines keeps coming off , i tried everything , locktite, thread sealant , it still comes off  where can i find the 89+90 style set up for the filter ?
