Anyone have oil filter that comes loose on 2nd gen AWD.

I was thinking If a safety wire, on the oil filter will keep it from coming loose.

Thanks,
Jim

Well it happened again everyone, unfortunately in the middle of traffic this time. This time I found the problem. There's a bolt that holds the filter housing and it became loose. All I could do is tighten it and hope that it doesn't happen again. Anybody else ever have that happen to them?

You should take it out, apply blue loctite to the threads and tighten it down, but not too tight as that will crush the oil cooler.

BTW Fram filters are about the worst you can buy IMO, cardboard filter elements are not something i want in my motor when they break down

Aw, horse shit. You know why more FRAM filters have trouble than any ten others? Because they sell a hundred times more filters than any fifty other makers. They also make most of the filters with other names on them.

As for the loose filter, and the consequences of over-tightening them:

hmm I wonder who made a post that said exactly this :shhh::D

I really don't think blue loctite will hold. Loctite is designed to come apart with heat which is why there is red. I never used any, I just re-tightened mine and had zero problems for the last 4 years with it.

Filters that fit do back off.. have had a few Hyundai Santa Fes with filters backing off..so yeah.

(they get loose just in time for the next oil change.. cheap rubber seals on the filter..they have a round profile..most oil filters have a flat rubber seal.-maybe thats the csause..who knows)

But good job catching it in time.

Aah my mistake, I completely missed that post. But yes, you were completely right. Here's an update.

I got under the car and tightened that bolt as much as I could, while trying not to over-tighten it. I also put some loctite (red) on the threads to ensure it won't back off again, as AWDPetmitsu recommended. Hopefully this doesn't happen again. Later on i'll edit this post and let everyone know what size socket I used on that bolt to help others in the future if they search for a similar issue (unless someone can chime in sooner).

Thanks for all the input guys.

BTW, I think this thread should be moved to a tech/newbie section, to make it easier for searching if anyone else has this kind of problem in the future.

I did the loctite methood and it came off just before my next oil change. i work at a ford dealership and i used a motorcraft filter the last 3 oil changes. These filters stick like glue. no leaks. part number for the 7 bolt is fl822 or fl2007.
